Sutton Recognized for Green Initiatives

Sutton (QC), Canada – Last month, Mont Sutton was twice formally recognized for its environmental practices. This Quebec ski resort, renowned for its unique and ample glade skiing and riding, was named as a finalist in the Eastern Townships Environmental Excellence Awards, and received a Brome-Missisquoi Excellence Award.

During the Eastern Townships Environmental Excellence Awards, organized by Conseil régional de l’environnement de l’Estrie and by Fondation estrienne en environnement, Mont Sutton was recognized for its “Share and Reforest” that took place last winter on this ski resort’s Facebook page. From March 28 to April 7, 2013, Sutton posted five of its eco-friendly actions and the Facebook community was invited to share each of these actions. For every “Share” of each action, Sutton officialspromised to plant one tree on the mountain to support forest regeneration and educate the skiing public.

During Brome-Missisquoi Excellence Awards held on Oct. 26, Mont Sutton was congratulated via the event’s “Environmental involvement and sustainable development” recognition. Since its opening in 1960, Mont Sutton has developed a Conscience Code to position itself as a ski area that cares about its environment. The Sutton Conscience Code, a working reference tool for sustainable development, documents eco-friendly actions taken at Mont Sutton in water management, energy efficiency, waste management, greenhouse gas emission reduction, community involvement, and preservation of wildlife and natural habitat.
