Avalanche Kills Snowboarder Near Kicking Horse

Golden (BC), Canada – An avalanche claimed the life of a 29-year-old Edmonton, Alberta man on Friday afternoon in the sidecountry just outside Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden.

Shane Schroeder was reported as missing by a fellow snowboarder, Alex Lee, at Kicking Horse on Friday afternoon. Police activated the Provincial Emergency Plan immediately and Golden Search and Rescue responded.

Schroeder’s was located in the avalanche debris and transported to Golden Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The BC Coroner Services with the assistance of the RCMP, has taken jurisdiction of the investigation.

“Yesterday was probably the hardest day in my life. I was with Shane when the [avalanche] occurred but was helpless to do anything,” Lee wrote on Facebook.

Tributes to Schroeder have filled the victim’s Facebook page. “A great guy with so much love for life. Thanks for the great times and laughter. Keep shredding Shane Schroeder. We will miss you,” wrote Jamie Cletus.

“Love you more than words can express. You will forever be in my heart,” added Alysha Hartfield.

Family members are preparing a memorial celebrating Schroeder’s life for later this week.
