Krasnaya Polyana, Russia – Sochi Olympic officials are changing the Games’ slopestyle course after Norwegian medal hope Torstein Horgmo fractured his collarbone on Monday and is now out of medal contention.
Athletes had already expressed concerns about the safety of steep jumps at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park, where the Olympic slopestyle will take place. Canadian rider Sebastien Toutant was quoted as saying that “It’s like jumping out of a building.”
Horgmo was attempting a trick on a rail near the top of the course earlier today when he fell hard on his face and shoulder, breaking his right clavicle. He was transported to the local athlete hospital where X-rays confirmed the fracture.
“Injuries and falls are part of this sport, but the timing is really bad,” Horgmo, 26, said in a prepared statement released by the Norwegian Olympic team.
International Ski Federation (FIS) official Roberto Moresi told the media that organizers and course designers are shaving the tops off of some jumps near the top of the slopestyle course to smooth the transition for riders, but denied that the course design was responsible for Horgmo’s injury.
Qualifying in men’s snowboard slopestyle gets underway Thursday.
