Carrabassett Valley, M – A 21-year-old Husson University student died on Tuesday after he skied off Sugarloaf’s black diamond Hayburner trail and into the trees.
Stephen Colvin, of Hoosick, N.Y., was skiing with three friends shortly after the mountain opened Tuesday morning when the incident occurred. Sugarloaf ski patrollers and local ambulance crews performed CPR until Colvin was pronounced dead in the mountain’s clinic and a request for a rescue helicopter was subsequently called off.
Colvin was reportedly not wearing a helmet. The Carrabassett Valley Police Department and Sugarloaf Ski Patrol are continuing their investigation.
The victim was a sophomore at Husson, located in Bangor, Maine, pursuing a degree in environmental science. He was also a linebacker on the school’s football team.
“The Husson football team is deeply saddened by Steve’s passing. Steve’s attitude, caring spirit, determination, and acceptance of all people will be greatly missed by everyone at Husson,” said the school’s head football coach, Gabby Price. “Our prayers and condolences extend out to Steve’s parents, Melissa and Craig, and his relatives, extended family, and friends. Steve deeply loved his family. We will continue on with Steve’s quest to be the best we can be.”
“We’re tremendously saddened to learn of the loss of a skier at our mountain today,” Sugarloaf GM John Diller said in a prepared statement. “Sugarloaf skiers and riders are a close-knit group, and a loss like this is felt throughout the community.”
