Rosa Khutor, Russia – The Rosa Khutor Extreme Park was rocking on Monday as Canada’s Alex Bilodeau became the first freestyle gold medalist (and the first Canadian male in any event) to repeat as Olympic Champion in a brilliant performance under the lights. Mikaël Kingsbury earned silver, delivering a one-two punch for Canada.

Russian’s Alexandr Smyshlyaev thrilled the crowd winning the bronze medal. Patrick Deneen, of Cle Elum, Wash., placed sixth for the best American result.

“I still can’t believe it, just like in Vancouver” said Bilodeau, of Rosemère, Quebec. “I knew I had done everything I could do be ready and I want to thank Mikaël for pushing me every single day for the last three years. I hope everyone in Canada enjoyed the show.”

“I did a great run with just a little mistake, Alex deserved it today,” said Deux-Montagnes, Quebec’s Kingsbury, also crediting his parents, “My parents were silver medalists with me today, they are my biggest supporters.”

Canadian Marc-Antoine Gagnon just missed the podium finishing fourth and Phil Marquis also made the top 10, finishing in the 9^th spot.

Deneen was on the bubble in the round of 12 when Canada’s Philippe Marquis dropped to eighth, paving the way for Deneen to climb into the medals round. Brad Wilson, of Butte, Mont., was 20^th, going out in the round of 20 when he did a full body touch on his top air, bouncing back up but his fate was sealed.

“​The Canadians have a few really strong skiers and today they showed that,” said Deneen. “The course is pretty crazy. It’s a little different than it was yesterday and we’re having to adapt to that each time. It’s part of the sport, though, and it’s something we know and adapt to as much as we can. The course didn’t freeze last night like we wanted and it was warmer today, which definitely had an affect on the hill.”

Many of the Sochi on-snow events have been plagued by the current warm weather. Snowboarders on Monday night urged the organizing committee to postpone the men’s and women’s halfpipe medal contests as a result.

The Canadian team won now four out of six medals in Olympic mogul skiing as the men added to Justine Dufour-Lapointe’s gold and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe’s silver earned Saturday night. After Smyshlyaev, the remaining moguls medal went to Vermont’s Hannah Kearney, who earned bronze for the women in Saturday’s contest.
