Mt. Crested Butte, CO – A 13-year-old boy from Olathe, Colo., died on Friday in a skiing accident at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.

Luis Olide died after striking a tree alongside Crested Butte’s intermediate Lower Treasury run.

Olide was part of an eighth-grade field trip to Crested Butte from the Olathe Middle High School. School officials provided additional counselors, teachers and administrators in the days following the incident to provide grief  support to students and teachers. Many students and staff left written messages and notes on a message wheel. According to Principal Scot Brown, “Luis was famously known for wearing a tie to school almost every day,” and many of the school’s 577 students wore a tie on Monday in the victim’s honor.
