Park City, UT – Montreal’s Justine Dufour-Lapointe has thrived this week skiing at Deer Valley Resort in Utah. Just 48 hours after winning a FIS World Cup event on Thursday, Dufour-Lapointe returned and captured the dual moguls title on Saturday by defeating Kazakhstan’s Yulia Galysheva 22-13 in the final. On the men’s side, Canadian mogul sensation Mikaël Kingsbury was once again upset in Deer Valley, finishing only fifth to France’s Anthony Benna.
The 21-year-old Dufour-Lapointe entered the event as the defending champion and did not disappoint. She now has a total of 12 FIS World Cup victories and 32 podium-finishes in her career.
“I felt good when I woke up this morning and I knew what I had to do to perform well out there. I concentrated on my skiing without looking at my rivals to not get distracted,” said Dufour-Lapointe. “I skied for myself and I really had the feeling that I dominated the course. I adapted my skiing to be consistent and opted for fast but clean runs. I am really proud of the way I skied today.”
Two Americans squared off for third place in a showdown that saw Jaelin Kauf defeat Matthews 26-9.
Kauf, who was the top U.S. women’s finisher in Thursday’s moguls competition, tackled the Champion mogul course six times against six different competitors, skiing clean, fast runs to land herself on the podium.
“After finishing my run in the moguls competition and qualifying for finals first, I knew it was good enough,” said Kauf, of Alta, Wyo. “I just had to stand up and ski my run. It was an amazing weekend. This is probably my favorite course I’ve ever skied. All my family was here too, so it was just an awesome experience.”
“Jaelin was once again very well prepared tonight,” stated U.S. moguls coach Lance Field. “She’s young, talented and brings a very high level of athleticism and speed. She’s able to execute and she has a great future ahead of her. Mikaela had another great night tonight as well. We’ve got a strong girls team, so we’ll be looking to see some more strong performances in the next few events.”
On the men’s side, Kingsbury was upset 16-19 in the quarter-finals by Finland’s Jimi Salonen to finish fifth overall, as Salonen went on to finish second ahead of Dmitriy Reiherd of Kazakhstan.
“It was a close dual. The new race format in dual moguls forces the higher ranked skier to change courses. The red course was more difficult today and slower. That’s the one I was in when I lost,” Kingsbury said of his defeat at the hands of Salonen. “I skied well on the blue course and I also had a good run on the red during another round. Jimi was the fastest out of the first jump, so I had to catch up to him. I was the first to arrive at the finish line but the judges saw things differently. I am happy with the way I skied, but Jimi deserved to be on the podium.”
Thomas Rowley, of Long Beach, N.Y., was the top U.S. men’s finisher in seventh, followed by Troy Murphy (Bethel, Maine) in 14th and Dylan Walczyk (Rochester, N.Y.) in 16th.
Justine Dufour-Lapointe now extends her World Cup standings lead over her sister Chloé by a score of 404 to 318. Kingsbury remains in the men’s lead with 425. Australia’s Matt Graham, who won on Thursday but finished only ninth on Saturday, is the next closest competitor with 286 points.
