Replacement of Sunday River’s Spruce Peak Lift Delayed

Newry, ME – Sunday River officials have now confirmed that the replacement for the Maine ski resort’s damaged Spruce Peak Triple, a chairlift that collapsed over the summer, won’t be ready until next winter.

The cable and chairs of the Spruce Peak Triple were found laying on the ground on July 10 after the lift’s top terminal separated from its supporting bedrock and toppled over. The lift was closed for the summer at the time of the accident, and no injuries were reported. After an investigation pinpointed inadequate concrete grout as the cause of the mishap, resort officials performed repairs on the Locke Mountain Triple, another Sunday River lift with similar design and construction.

Although the lift will remain absent this winter, the terrain served by the Spruce Peak Triple will be groomed regularly by Sunday River snowcats, and the terrain will remain accessible this winter via a short hike from the Aurora Peak lift along the green-circle Sirius trail.
