New Skier/Boarder Cross Course Set for TELUS Nancy Greene Alpine Classic

Sun Peaks (BC), Canada – This February 24-25, the TELUS Nancy Greene Alpine Classic will return to Sun Peaks Resort in British Columbia with a brand new course and format. New for 2017, the race will be held on a professionally designed skier and boarder cross course, tailored for fun, recreational use.

Straying from the traditional dual slalom format, the new skier and boarder cross course will feature berms, rollers and turns, accessible to skiers and boarders of varying age and ability. The race is a four-person team format, with at least one member of the opposite sex on each team.

Taking place on the same slope as previous years, the new course will be constructed in early February on Sun Peaks’ Suncatcher run by world-renowned course designer, Jeff Ihaksi of White Industries. While Ihaksi and his team are looking forward to lending their expertise to Sun Peaks for the new entry-level course, the team is best known for their integral role in the planning and execution of the Olympic Games in both Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn from the world’s best, as 2010 Olympic Ski Cross gold medalist, Ashleigh McIvor, will be on hand giving complimentary coaching sessions.

“We are all excited with the change in format for the TELUS Nancy Greene Alpine Classic,” says Sun Peaks Director of Skiing, Nancy Greene-Raine. “The new format promises to become a new Classic, and we are thrilled to have Olympic Ski Cross Champion Ashleigh McIvor as our special guest coach.”

“I’m looking forward to heading to Sun Peaks for the TELUS Nancy Greene Alpine Classic in February,” says McIvor. “For the first time ever, it’s going to be a ski cross — so I suppose it is fitting that Canada’s first ski cross Olympic Champion should be there to inspire and coach the participants. I know everyone will have fun learning this new way to race — and it’s for a great cause.”

The long-standing Sun Peaks event, now in its 21st season, has collectively raised over CAN$500,000, with proceeds going to Sun Peaks Health Association, Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, and Sun Peaks Junior Ski Racing.
