American Skier Airlifted from Mt. Hutt

Methven, New Zealand – An unidentified 21 year-old American skier was airlifted from New Zealand’s Mt. Hutt ski area today after sustaining what are reported to be life-threatening injuries.nAccording to Mt. Hutt ski area manager David Wilson, the woman slipped on some ice and fell, hitting some rocks in the process. She is reported to have incurred critical head and chest injuries. A Westpac Rescue Helicopter was alerted to the incident around 2:40 p.m. local time, and transported the victim to Christchurch Hospital.

No other information was available at press time regarding the incident, which is the second fatality at Mt. Hutt in only its first week of operation this ski season. On Monday, a 60-year-old skier died after his vehicle left the Mt. Hutt access road following a day of skiing. His body was located overnight early Tuesday morning.
