Season’s Fifth Ski Death on New Zealand’s South Island

Methven, New Zealand – It’s been a deadly ski season for skiing on New Zealand’s South Island this winter, as the fifth death this season occurred Thursday in a Dunedin, New Zealand hospital.nThe unnamed male 80-year-old Japanese citizen fell on Tuesday while training in Coronet Peak ski area’s Rocky Gully race arena. He hooked a gate, but skied to the bottom of the run under his own power, where he later collapsed. The victim was transported to a hospital in Dunedin where he died on Thursday. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and the cause of death is under investigation.

Coronet Peak is owned by NZSki, which also owns Mt. Hutt ski area, where the four other deaths this season have occurred. Mt. Hutt was also the site of an in-bounds avalanche that swept away two guests on Tuesday, with no serious injuries were reported. High winds also closed Mt. Hutt’s access road on Thursday and stranded more than 1,000 in the ski area’s base lodge overnight.
