Toronto, Canada – The executive committee of Toronto’s city council voted Monday to restore C$600,000 in funding to keep Toronto’s two ski areas operating this winter.nEarlier this year, a report from Toronto’s parks and recreation department recommended closing both Centennial Park Ski and Snowboard Centre in Etobicoke and Earl Bales Ski and Snowboard Centre in North York. In May, city officials issued a call for bids to private companies to operate the ski areas, indicating that they would close this winter if no operator was found. Not a single bidder responded.
On Monday, the executive committee recommended reversing course and restoring funding to keep open the two ski hills that provide an economical and nearby avenue for city youth to become involved in skiing and snowboarding. Centennial Park’s facilities include a t-bar and magic carpet lift, while Earl Bales offers a double chairlift and rope tow. Amenities at both ski areas include night skiing, lessons, rentals and a snack bar. Lift ticket rates range from $11 for one hour to $25 for an all-day pass. Beginner-only passes cost $8 per day.
