Queenstown, New Zealand – Day two of New Zealand’s National Ski Championships took place Wednesday at Coronet Peak near Queenstown under blue skies, with Tim Cafe and Sarah Jarvis being named National Slalom Champions for 2010.nJarvis, of Whakapapa, was on a high going into the slalom race after winning the New Zealand Giant Slalom Crown Tuesday and defending her title of National GS Champion.
The men’s race was won by Norway’s Lars Elton Myhre with a time of 1:38.20, followed by America’s David Chodunsky, securing silver in 1:38.78. Truls Johansen, of Norway, earned bronze in 1:39.03.
The women’s race was won by Veronica Zuzulova, of Slovakia, in 1:36.22. Norway’s Lotte Smiseth Sejersted finished second with 1:36.68 while Aline Bonjour of Switzerland went home with bronze in a time of 1:37.58.
Queenstown’s Olympian, Tim Cafe, on Tuesday became the 2010 National Men’s Slalom Champion with a time of 1:46.40.
“It was a challenging hill with a quality field,” said Cafe, who finished 13th overall. “It’s great to come away with the honors.”
Following Cafe, Adam Barwood, was the second fastest kiwi, clocking 1:46.65, placing 14th overall. Harrison Steedman, finishing 16th overall in 1:53.52 was the third fastest New Zealander.
Jarvis, who placed 10th overall, defended her title becoming the 2010 National Slalom Champion with a time of 1:41.66. Taylor Rapley followed, clocking 1:43.67 and finishing 15th overall. Lucie Tait-Jamieson was the third fastest kiwi, with 18th overall and a time of 1:44.67.
The National Championships now shift to Mt. Hutt near Methven for the final event of the National Championships, the super G.
