Mt. Hotham (VIC), Australia – Some of the heaviest rains in 15 years caused a landslide at Mt. Hotham ski area on Saturday, destroying the Village Ticket Office.nNo serious injuries were reported.
“Yesterday a saturated natural landslip occurred from the Golden Point area which caused severe damage to the Village Ticket Office, adjacent to the Village Chairlift,” ski resort officials said in a prepared statement. “The Village Chairlift was not directly involved as the Ticket Office took the impact of the landslip.
“MHSC and Ski Patrol worked closely with the Police and the CFA to ensure all guests and staff were removed safely from the skifield as their safety is the number one priority,” the statement concluded.
The incident followed “incessant” rain that began early on Saturday morning and fell through until the wee hours of Sunday. Mt. Hotham has received a modest amount of new snow on the backside of the storm following the rain. Cleanup operations from the landslide are ongoing.
Similar weather-related incidents were reported at other Australian ski resorts over the weekend, including a landslide that buried a parking lot at Mt. Buller, trapping about 300 cars, and yet another landslide that blocked the road to Falls Creek ski area.
