Salzburg, Austria – Austrian snowboarding sensation Stephan Gimpl, four times the World Cup Big Air champion, has announced his retirement from the World Cup Circuit that starts this Saturday in London.nThe Salzburg native has told the Austrian Press Agency that he will now devote his attention to a film and photography career, as well as a book project.
Gimpl, now 30, said that it’s time to make way for younger athletes on the World Cup tour.
Gimpl won nine World Cups en route to the Big Air title last season. He also earned the bronze medal at the World Championships.
Austrian Ski Federation chief Christian Galler said that while they are disappointed with Gimpl’s decision to retire, they are forced to accept it. The organization expects to have athletes Stefan Falkeis, Clemens Schattschneider, Adrian Krainer, Mathias Weissenbacher and Patrik-Linus Huber start the big air season this Saturday on the manmade ramp in London.
