    "Unprecedented" April Snowstorm

There also seems to be the issue of snow quality preservation after these big dumps. Last season i waited until 4 days before my trip to book Courmayeur seeing 2+ feet in the forecast but one warm day following the storm (1st week of March) and all of the off piste except one northern facing...

    A-Basin, CO 3-23-25

Love A-Basin. If it was my local mountain a lot of my opinions about making it to Europe would be similar to EMSC. People who live out there are spoiled. I spent a few days in the Berkshires last week at Catamount and all I can say is our local hill is a bit different. When I was in college I...

Three Valleys, FR Mar 10-15, 2025

Were you on the United flight that leaves DC around 5 PM? I took it last year and likewise couldnt believe the immigration situation in Geneva. I had been hoping to be on the slopes in Courmayeur earlier but the delay set me back. Ive found Milan and Zurich to be much faster, I wonder if that is...

    Europe 24/25

You know Im addicted to Europe when I still am itching to get back after nearly getting killed!

    Europe 24/25

The crowded pistes are definitely pretty brutal. Not just the snow quality but the sheer amount of people—it’s not even skiing sometimes. What goes on at St Anton is pretty crazy. I’m very much on the opposite circuit as you, trying to hit all the larger places that I’ve never been to and...

    Europe 24/25

Reading all of the TRs from the last few days and how this discussion has evolved I think ultimately I come back to this point as being where I fall. I understand EMSC's feelings on the conditions, especially having local mountains to compare to. But as a New Yorker, who could equally get...

    Courmayeur / Skyway Monte Bianco, Italy: February 4 & 5, 2025

Chris, looking at my photos from last year that looks like the run that required hopping a fence and putting on your skis inside the top of the couloir. I did not feel comfortable at all so I bailed and went for a drink in the restaurant while my cousin and the guide did it 😂 if so, when he did...

St. Moritz Trip Starts with Class 3+ Avalanche

This article/video is making the rounds today. Good press for airbags. This is much more intense than ours was given the tight and steep terrain and that the skier immediately falls...

St. Moritz Trip Starts with Class 3+ Avalanche

We were probably 10/20 yards outside of the slide area at that point so we were sinking in regular snow. I’d imagine the debris was easier to get footing on once he reached that part. But we couldn’t even make it that far it was so deep. Which is strange because it didn’t seem like that much...

St. Moritz Trip Starts with Class 3+ Avalanche

Very poised. And the rest of us wanted to help but literally every step we took we sunk into body deep snow. We couldn’t move. Somehow he was able to get over there. We had a general sense of his direction which helped him get started. But physically it was no small feat getting there.

St. Moritz Trip Starts with Class 3+ Avalanche

This is an interesting distinction and I think you are correct. This was a guide booked through a ski school. He was also from South America and there seasonally. His 7th season I believe. In hindsight, my previous guides in Courmayeur, Zermatt, and St Anton were all very much local and booked...

St. Moritz Trip Starts with Class 3+ Avalanche

We haven't really had a conversation with the ski school yet. To be honest, we do not want to cause any trouble for our guide who is a lovely guy and obviously is despondent over what happened. I think if we were more aggressive with the school it could make things difficult for him and we are...

    Europe 24/25

We had this same no light on Friday at Corviglia. The piste skiers in the group called it a day quick. Still had an amazing lunch though. Luckily our guide found me some tree skiing and I was able to eek out a solid day. Saturday we had the same experience you did, low clouds in the Engadin...

    Silvretta Montafron AT. 1/27/25

Its a testament to how much I love skiing in the alps that in spite of what happened we still had an amazing trip and cant wait to come back. Plenty of drinks were had.
