1st family trip out west

I might be a little early in asking, but my wife likes to plan early.
I have 2 girls 9 and 12 both strong intermediate skiers. I have skied all over the west and BC. I am looking for a full service resort with a town for my wife. Also one that has direct flights form NYC. American airlines or Continental would be nice since I have some free tickets. I like the SLC resorts but the flights into SLC are poor from NYC.
Thanks for your help

I think the limiting factor would be "direct flight" from NYC

You could definitely get to Denver (Breckenridge, Vail, Keystone) and Salt Lake (Park City) via direct flights. Continental has a weekly non-stop to Telluride, CO (Montrose). Probably could do Steamboat too.

All have a town/resort and enough intermediate terrain.

Crested Butte is a real town with good public transportation (forget renting a car--it's superfluous in CB) and plenty of intermediate terrain and terrific expert skier offerings. The town would probably satisfy your wife's interests.

Our last flight to CB was on United, but Continental might still go there. Either way, the flight will probably require a transfer in Denver or perhaps Chicago.

Cheers,
Jeff

I have been to Beaver Creek, CO many, many times over the years. Short drive from Vail Valley airport, (You would probably have to fly into Denver, meaning about a hour and a half or 2 hour drive.) But the Resort is great for families, has great accomodations, and is way less crowded than the other Vail Resorts (Vail, Breckenridge, and Keystone). The Resort also has very good intermidiate terrain, which they groom like crazy. Not to mention some great tree sking and bumps. (I have had some CRAZY powder days in Royal Elks Glades.) So anyway i highly recomend the resort and think you should give it a try, O and your wife will love the shopping there, Beaver Creek is far from roughing it.

If you're looking for non-stop flights, that very much limits you. I believe Continental still has a seasonal flight from Newark to Steamboat/Hayden. You're about 45 minutes from the resort. A goodly amount of intermediate terrain. An OK town.

Salt Lake City is a Delta hub so it has great service if you're willing to fly Delta. Park City is the only real destination town in Utah. All 3 ski areas have plenty of intermediate terrain.

If you're willing to connect in a hub, there are a lot more choices. If you need to use free tickets, American is your best bet since they run flights to a number of ski resorts from Dallas.
