Some days are diamonds. Just the right combination of everything turned Tuesday into one. I fell asleep to the sound of rain the night before, and wondered if it would still be falling in the morning ? the morning of my birthday. My friends and I were going skiing.

The forecast had mentioned thunderstorms, but when we woke up, the sun was shining. On our way up the pass, everything we saw looked fresh and white and when we started hiking, the drifts were up to our knees. My only hope the night before was that there wouldn?t be any lightning. Instead, it was powder on my birthday, on a sunny morning in the second week of May.

We didn?t plan for that, nor did we expect the day to have such a pure quality to it. It wasn?t just me or Roman or Katka who had that mood, it was all of us sharing it with Winter?s innocence and her constant quest for fun. It was like children playing in a sandbox, only our sandbox was a gigantic expanse of untouched snow.

We were sitting at the top, looking around at the surrounding mountains, all pristine, and we talked about cartoons. I still can?t believe they never saw the Jetsons.

Hardly anyone was up there all day, but at 7:30 in the morning, there was no one there but us. Without any tracks to analyze, we weren?t sure how deep the snow would be below the ridge, and honestly didn?t anticipate that much. When Katka started off that first run, Roman and I couldn?t believe what we were seeing.

No. Way.

My turn! My turn! I?m going next!

No way.

It?s me! It?s me! It?s me! From the bottom looking up.

Roman's turn turned into snow flying everywhere. No way:

In Czech, the two of them sang ?happy birthday? to me at the top of that run, and then threw me in the snow. And then we did that. And then some more of that.

And everything was funny. We laughed a lot. Couldn?t help it. It was just one of those days where everything is right on the money, nothing is forced and it all just falls together perfectly. Like how all the right elements have to combine perfectly to set the sky on fire at sunset. It was perfect.

After multiple hikes, Winter was the first to drop out when she could hardly even move anymore.

We did one more, and skied away from yet another work of art before Roman fell to the fatigue of his third shift schedule. There?s something oddly familiar about that?

With tired legs of our own, Katka and I coasted down to A-Basin to let lifts do the work. We got into a snowball fight with the lifties, who stopped the chairs and made people wait while we dangled ten feet in the air and got bombarded with frozen projectiles. We couldn?t stop laughing and neither could they.

And so much for letting lifts do the work, we simply couldn?t pass on an East Wall powder run in May.

It was the first time in years that my birthday actually meant something to me instead of being just another day. It was a very happy time, I was treated very well, and it just can?t get any better than that.
