49 North was my only skiing in Washington and my fourth new area this trip. (Besides new-to-me Red Mountain Resort and Schweitzer, I haven’t yet written up Whitewater which we skied 2/21 with 4” new after 4/2/2/2" on preceding days).
From Colville, where we stayed in very spacious AirBnb a mile E of downtown, we drove about 20 miles S on 395, then 10 miles E up moderately steep, mostly snow-packed Flowery Trail Road. We’d bought tickets online previous evening for $60 plus almost $5 state tax the night before. There is no Senior discount until 70 and it's $10 less expensive Mon-Thu, more on weekends. We heeded warning to screenprint tickets in case Internet was not available at resort.
We loaded Northern Spirit, their only Express which climbs 1850’ in 7 minutes to 5774’ Chewelah Peak. We skied 1500’ vertical slow chair Sunrise side twice, skiing excellent groomers Sunrise and Blastface, (Skiace on Sunrise)
before returning to main base via Mahre, New Propector’s and exciting with steep rollovers Tailings to bottom of chair 4 (and not running weekday chair 6 that goes up 5300’ Angel Peak). We didn’t want to ride slow 1600’ vertical Silver Lode in shade so we poled out too-flat road to beginner chair #3 Payday that we used to return to Express chair. We skied a couple of more laps on Sunrise, tested some 4-day old powder that was OK where N-facing in places
before going into yurt at bottom of Sunrise for a large, less than $3 hot apple cider for me and a monkey bread cinnamon roll for Skiace (not as good as my wife makes). View N from top.
View E from top, probably could see Schweitzer on clear day
View W from top with not running during week Angel Peak
After break we skied a couple of more Sunrise with me cutting off Valhalla into what was probably ungroomed Tantanka for some powder turns. At top, I lost Skiace on re-run of Mahre, New Propector’s and Tailings and rode 1967-era chair 4 where top of run under the lift, Sluice Box, had a one-groomer wide strip that I got Skiace to try with me. It was mostly good with only one short challenging
area due to uneven groom. The rest of our short day we lapped Klondike under top of frontside Express chair,
which some variations on flatter bottom. SkiTracks had me over 22K when we quit at 1:30. We stopped at Zip’s, ubiquitous WA fast food not seen in other states where Skiace had to re-pack. I had Friday $6 special of 3 pieces of cod and chips with 4 self-serve sauces (one was ketchup). Then we got through non-freeway N Spokane and to GEG at 4 pm. For trip Skiace had 9 days (3 each at Red and Mustang, 1 each at Revelstoke, Whitewater and 49 North) and I am at 13. Last picture is runs at Mt. Spokane ski area from top of 49 North.
