4x4 needed for SLC?

Headed up to SLC, Cottonwood Cyn Mar 10 - 14th.

Do I need to rent a 4x4 or can I get by with a mid-size car w/ no chains?

What are the chain controls like in the canyons? As you may know here in LA, even though the roads are fairly easy to drive if you know how to drive in the snow, the CHP is almost always out doing enforcement.

Just trying to save about $300 or so by not having to rent a SUV w/ 4x4.

Thanks for the advice.

This has actually been discussed to death numerous times before. IMO, save your money. Chain control days represent a small minority of overall ski days in LCC and BCC. On those days, simply park in a lot and take the ski bus. Yes, the Salt Lake County Sheriff enforces chain restrictions.

And what about the snow tires or chains requirement ? Rentals come with All weather (all season ?) tires apparently, do those qualify as snow tires ? What's the point of spending big $$$ to rent a 4x4 if it's on the wrong tires !!!!

sorry if i'm the 500th asking that same question !

thank's

Hey, no worries. Unlike the recent change in Quebec law requiring snow tires, all-seasons count as snow tires for unrestricted days in the canyons.

Wow that is fast service ! Thank's !

You mean they qualify for restricted day's right ?

I should have been more clear in my explanation. What I meant was that for days when 4x4/chains are not required, i.e. when there are no "restrictions", all seasons are all you need. Non-summer tires are required for the canyons throughout the winter months regardless of weather conditions.

And with our rental being a 4x4, that covers those "4x4 or chains required" day's, so with all season tires and a 4x4 we're 100% covered right ? I know my trip agency's rep should be the one answering those questions, but I'd really like a second opinion !

a thousand thank's from an anxious Utah first timer ! (13-20 march)

Sorry, I hadn't realized that you had rented a 4WD. Yep, you're covered for any contingency.
