day73.... started at the bird met up with pat and dale and skidog and tele jon on the bypass road at nine as usual. trams were casual departures this morning early every twenty min. snow was softing in mineral basin when the nine twenty tram arrived at the summit not a cloud to be seen at this hour of the day. north facing really only got to be damp powder yesterday so that was pretty much frozen railroad tracks in a pretty much smooth surface where no one touched it nice but not quite rite needed softing to occure . out through the cham.one backcountry gate around to the base of living the dream across out to sugar cliffs . south to slightly south east was just about passed for quality corn by then . west facing proper was still perfect in fact needed a tiny bit more softing ...... west facing was the call today without dispute from anyone i was skiing with . sun cooked it enough to be supportable smooooth with some time during the night after it set up it snowed about an inch of fairy dust on top that just made for an air cushoned ride through the sugar cliffs ounce you reached a certain speed it got really really smooooth .......100% supportable i've skied countless days of high quality corn in the wasatch but when it snows a tiny bit after it sets up it's special where it didn't get touched . noticed that the bottom of living the dream was still 100% supportable when we passed so on the ride up mineral basin chair i threw out an idea that we should hike baldy and ski living the dream from the summit and it met no resistence from anyone cause they knew the bottom already. super smooooth on west facing proper departing the ridge heading west down living the dream ( perfection ) all the way out through sugar cliffs again to the base of the chair. seeing it's armed forces day today it's only fitting snow bird host some military people . navy seals were training high alltitude on baldy and sugarloaf peaks two platoons from what i could count. army rangers were training on american fork twins snowbird side . you could see them marching on the ridge above old reliable bowl and pipe line bowl out to the center twin and on the summit of the west twin they marched a reverse knife edge back down off of the summit of east twin down to the road to provo met up with them when they were just above the road to provo coming back down from the knife edge traverse. went out to gad two chair summit departing the summit just to the west of the chair trying to stay west facing as much as possible (gadzooks i think) . even at lower altitudes it still really needed today to cook facing north for the most part (perfection to the base of gad two chair).. below there it had turned to five inches of mush back down across big emma to the tram . a bit of refreshment on the plaza and back up the tram ... by now they were running on a regular schedule of departures . out cham. one gate again but now were going to alta still zero resistence from the group . .. out high -t to west rustler maybe twenty min to late but still really nice ( a bit soft at the bottom ) . back through wildcat trees to the westward ho ridge down into snowbird ... lost skidog and tele jon as we passed the bypass road . stopped at my truck and left my coat (no jacket required now )!!!! back to the plaza for lunch . up the tram for two more little cloud chairs and a great scott going back to my truck. the backcountry gate that was at armpit is now on baldy ridge were you go either into mineral basin via lupine loop or peruvian gulch via chips run . tomorrow morning trams will be departing for the summit at eight o'clock for the public and closing for the day at two p.m. that's a whole hour earlier could make for some nice early backside in the morning . sorry no pics admins gone to the desert ...
