A-Basin, CO 1-12-08 (New Montezuma Bowl)

Summary: Nothing too extreme, but still a good looking bowl that will make the Basin 'ski differently'; but I'll be waiting for a lot more snow before going back again.

**************************************
Had to do the real job for half a day so hit the Basin about 1:30pm with my wife (on my way to work a race in Breck on Sunday).

It's a good looking bowl, nothing too extreme, but some solid pitch for much of it (skiers right anyway). You have to hike (short) to do full vert on the best parts/chutes of the skiers right side and only the first couple sections/chutes/'trails' were open.

I can see the possibilities, and it will definitely make A-Basin ski differently, but mostly I was disappointed in the rockiness of things. I had one core shot a several other significant dings (thank goodness I was on my rock skis). There seemed to be a LOT of just barely hidden land mines. If you stuck to the easier parts of the bowl you could easily have not hit anything (my wife didn't), but then what's the point?

I'd say that for average skiers, go ahead on the easier parts of the bowl, but for anyone wanting to hit the better stuff, only go during late season, or very big snow years.

One of the other funky things was that the blue trail on the map that collects all the skiers on the skiers right of the bowl was groomed
(all of 2 groomer widths); but had a 10-15 foot vertical uphill in the middle of it, on the way down to the chair. I would think a lot of tourists will not like that aspect much, though no big deal for users of these boards.

The snow that was there, was cut up powder of anywhere from 6-18" deep and skied rather nicely in many spots. Weather was kind of overcast/partly sunny. At least one run was essentially skiing by braille though.

Edit: wanted to note East Wall is still closed...

Thanks for the update, I was curious how the rest of the ski area looked like. Been reading your reports, definitely adds to the variety of that "attention whore" at Alta.

Happy New Year.

Thanks for the report! I debated about heading over there on Sunday (I worked a race Saturday at Breck but didn't work the YSL Sunday) but decided on opening weekend it was probably crazy. Which it was, as I headed back over the pass from Keystone there were people parked in the highway pull offs both above and below the actual parking areas and hiking to the lifts.

Great report. I'm thinking of heading out there in mid to late April for a weekend trip to A-Basin. I know it just opened but do you, or anyone have any thoughts as to whether the Montezuma bowl will still be open. I'm not familiar with that terrain and/or how much of the other trails will still be open in late April.

I believe it; looked packed parking wise, but the 1:30pm arrival actually allowed us to find an empty spot in the 2nd row of the early riser lot!

Happy New Year.

And to you.

mid to late April for a weekend trip to A-Basin

Hard to say for the new bowl. It faces heavily south so will be spring conditions by then for sure if it is kept open through April (Similar exposure as Vail's back bowls as near as I can tell). The entire front side of A-basin should be open in that time frame, usually including the East Wall and North Pole chutes too (if enough snow at all during the year, those are march/april/and maybe early may in a typical year).

April is the best month on average at A-Basin. Maximum snowpack, 2nd highest average snowfall month, usually still winter surface conditions. Skier's right of Montezuma will be the exception to the winter conditions part with the exposure.

A-Basin is notoriously slow in getting natural coverage in early season. As of a week ago nearby Loveland was at 82% of normal snowfall, one of the lowest percentages in what is now shaping up to be a distinctly above average season in most of the West. In Colorado this season, in general the farther west you go the more snow there is.

We were at A-Basin in mid-April last year and can confirm that it still had winter conditions (including snow still coming down!), except at the very bottom of the mountain, where there had clearly been some melting and re-freezing. But there's no reason to ski down there anyway except when you're ready to go home.
