One last day for my season.

A nice lazy start at just before 10am to find the snow was already soft and approaching slushy on the bottom, though less so on the upper mtn. I can't avoid bumping into people I know when it's down to only one place open. I ended up taking a run with the ski team coaches & kids, chatting with some of the coaches for other teams in lift lines and eventually taking some runs with the current president of the ski team (Eldora) and her daughter. And yes, a half full lift pen in the am, and then a full maze up top from about noon on - not that it takes more than ~5 min or so. Mostly cloudy with a cool breeze on the upper half up until a little before 2pm when it quickly changed over to almost all sun. I was surprised to be skiing in mostly my normal outfit, but with gloves and one layer less. It was the right call for the upper mtn until the sun came out. I stuck it out for another hour before calling it around 2:45. They had a live band going in the base area and while crowded, the 'Beach' seemed more subdued than usual (noise/music/crazy antics wise).

As to operations, all the good stuff closed up for the season mid-week. So Pali is closed, Zuma bowl is closed, and the chutes on the east wall are all closed. Only the lower East wall is open and only till late morning. I still say it's a week too early to be closing the N facing steeps off. The only natural activity I saw anywhere in the vicinity was super steeps that faced S or SE. No other aspects.

why is it that abasin can stay open as long as they want but all other CO resorts seem to close early/mid-april? (save loveland and couple others)

I can't answer that, though it may have something to do with contracts with the Forest Service. A-Basin does not have as much vertical as the other areas, and it's pure north-facing, so it keeps snow down to the base longer than the other areas. We are staying at Keystone and the lower slopes have only patches of snow (very sad)!

Breck looks better up high but haven't been close enough yet to view the lower slopes.

I do know you (and I) are better off at Mammoth. There is more skiable terrain, more groomers, and more snow. Also the practice of "salting" keeps the groomers better longer. I believe the temps at Mammoth have been about 10 degrees lower than the Basin, except for maybe the past few very hot days. So the top keeps better snow longer.

A-Basin is really good only from 9-noon. By then the top gets pretty slushy and skiing to the bottom is no fun at all.

We'll be at Mammoth by Sunday. Hope there's a cooling trend to preserve the snow until 4th of July weekend - we've spent too much time in CO and not enough in Mammoth this winter! :-({|=

It is very logical for A-Basin to be the best late season area for Colorado:
1) Easy daytrip from Denver
2) Very high base elevation
3) Above average snowfall, but more importantly that snowfall is skewed to late season
4) High percentage north exposure. This separates A-Basin from Loveland, which shares the above 3 attributes

Wolf Creek might be better for substantially higher base depths, but late season is not viable for an area 4 hours from a population center.

As discussed in other threads, A-Basin is at its best in April, which is usually a winter month in terms of snowfall, surface conditions and max season base depth. Once Pali closes, it's a small area, not comparable to the late season contenders in other western regions. And as skibum4ever notes, a shorter window for good groomed skiing vs. areas that use salt.

Mt. Bachelor is still the most consistent IMHO for good corn/spring skiing until its premature close a week before Memorial Day.

As in 2005, this is/will be a good season to compare strong late seasons at Mammoth and Snowbird.

I don't think mammoth is going to make it till July 4th this season. In the past 10 days they have gone reporting from a 6-12 ft base to a 3-6 ft base. :(
