a basin the last week of may?

bump skier

Hi, I'm thinking about going to arapahoe basin during the last week in may and could use some advice.

-Considering that this is a low snow year for them, is it still pretty much a given that they will be open then?

-Would you expect them to have any ungroomed or moguled terrain at that time or is likely to be just groomed stuff?

thanks for any input

Not likely to be much in the way of bumps or real steeps by then. Though some 'off piste' around. Timing the softness would be critical though. Most of the upper bowl open and lower groomers open. Pali closed, east wall closed, Montezuma closed by that time frame. See my TR from That time frame in '07...

Abasin's website talks about staying open till June, though a local rumor is that they might close mid-May. Not due to snow, preservation is really good at the Basin, but due to people/economy. Just a rumor at this point. Personally I think up through about the first weekend in May is good - Pali area is nearly always still open with bumps for example and in about 50% of years still winter snow on some of it.

In terms of diversity of ski terrain still open, Mammoth is the best bet for late May. Particularly since this is a well above average year there. Not sure how much is still open then at Whistler, but it will be less than usual this year.
