Advice on Colorado winds?

In the Tahoe area there are some resorts that routinely have lift closings due to high winds - Squaw Valley & Apline Meadows come to mind. I'm wondering if the Colorado resorts from Beaver Creek to Loveland have the same problem and if they do which resorts are the best bet on a windy day.

Your primise is correct, but generalities seem difficult to make. In our experience Beckenridge suffers the most on such days because the cruising terrain becomes wind polished and eastern-like. Even though the snow can remain good, the Horseshoe Bowl area can get pretty rough too from the wind exposure.

Probably, Copper is the best for wind protection. Keystone has also seemed pretty good. And we've actually had reasonable luck in windy days at A-basin--with some notable counter-examples--that is, it seems to depend on the direction the front is coming in from. We have been out on windy days in the other areas between Loveland to Vail and cannot remember one being particularly better than the others.

I was going to say Copper is the best, and Loveland the worst for windy days..

of course, the worst place ever is Mammoth! I don't think its possible to have a storm there with winds less than 100 mph.

No one in Colorado has wind issues in the same league as Mammoth/Squaw/Alpine. Breck/Loveland/A-Basin in that order would have the most IMHO.

This one of the strengths of Vail. There is a lot of open terrain, but when it snows you'll usually get powder without the wind effect that is common in the Sierra.

Thanks to all for the advice. Last year at Tahoe was great for snow, but those winds. Yikes!

Glad to hear the great snow of Colorado doesn't come with 100mph+ gusts. Us East Coasters feel that the risk of hurricanes should exempt us from winter blasts.

Thanks again
