Alpine Meadows - 1/31/05

The skiing in California has been just phenomenal this year -- since October! And Alpine on Sunday was no exception. The bases are deep. The surface conditions great. And people were definitely out enjoying the $39 lift tickets - a little crowded on the sun decks/lines.

Alpine is my favorite Tahoe place - multi-epxosures, bowls, trees, cornices, lots of hike-to terrain (therefore, less powder competition than Squaw) and you can actually get to it on a powder day (versus Kirkwood where the pass closes all the time).

Everything was skiing really well - especially with another 12" or more in the past week. However, the California sun is strong and can change East and South exposures to slush and hardness by the end of the day.
What is interesting is just how scoured the ridges are still with 150"+ this month. You cannot really traverse unless you want to destroy your skis from the Summit/Ward Peak. Scott to is really wind-blown inparts too....I thought parts of Promised Land would have collected more snow.

Other than that, everything is just superb! Areas like Key Hole are nice wind-blow. Still some fresh on the sides of the Saddle. Gentian Gully and Chute That Seldom Slides had pockets off of Scott. The western exposures in the Sun Bowl were skiing well and the northerly ascpects of Wolverine, and Beaver bowls.

Good day.
