We picked up 15 year-old friend of my son in Sunnyvale and were back on the road at 5:30 am. We stopped near Caldecott Tunnel above Oakland and got four $20 Alpine tickets. Arrived Porter?s in Truckee just after they opened at 9 to pickup a snowboard for my son and met friend who drove up from Nevada City. It was overcast and we saw signs of recent drizzle leaving Bay Area and arriving Truckee. We were on Roundhouse lift before 10 and warmed up on Blue Trail which had not frozen, but was still very skiable. We went up Summit and found the top cloudy and firm. We tried Wolverine Bowl, but could not find anything that was soft enough. Went back up Roundhouse and found Sympathy Face was good.
Eventually, we moved back to Summit and did at least four runs on Peter?s Peril which faces east, is very steep and was very good. By cutting right a couple of times, you could also hit Sympathy and a couple of other steep knolls that held good snow. Eventually we tried the very high, north-facing Palisades which held good snow, even on my last run about 3 pm. By traversing as high as possible under the Keyhole and across the Saddle we twice got to High Yellow Face which was also very good and responsible for my only fall when I could get a quick turn in the soft snow and went over a small tree.
Considering that it did not freeze in Truckee or Alpine base and the high winds, the conditions were very good. 13 runs/19K vertical.
Following wind speeds may be kilometers as we thought it was steady 25 mph winds on 4/9, not 40+ mph as this data from very windy peak on Sierra Crest shows. From http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/rev/remotedata/ward.php
