Alpine reported 10” new in the last 24 hours, another 10” in the previous 24 hours plus 5” and 6” each preceding day for at total of 31” in last 4 days. Squaw reported even more at 14” in last 24, 11 in previous 24 and 4 and 5 in preceding days for a total of 34”. My friend from Truckee was not coming out, but his neighbor and guests were planning to go to Alpine. I had a Tahoe Card ticket good for Alpine and knew that Summit, Alpine’s highest lift had not spun during storm on Wed. so I was in line when loading started shortly after 9 am. But not only did I pick the slower of the two singles lines, the regular maze nearly emptied before I loaded.
I found a untracked line down Wolverine Bowl by cutting close to (and through) some little trees. Snow was wind-affected in the bowl and did not ski that deep, but it was still great to find untracked in an over 1,000 foot wide bowl. (Later I saw two people try to make Idiot’s Delight live up to its name.) I cut left into the steep Sisters where I found more untracked. Next run I skied part of Peril Ridge, then cut into Peter’s Peril and found deeper and untracked snow, before cutting across groomed runs and getting more powder turns in between runs. It was so good I did it three more times, finding some deeper snow in the trees and more very lightly tracked off Gunner’s Knob near the bottom.
Next time at the top of Summit, I skied through the unloading station for Alpine Bowl chair and hiked the High Traverse. I followed the same route up that we finished the day with on 2/27. It was hard to pass up wind-buff into Sherwood Forest, Alpine’s backside. I also passed up Lower Saddle, where we skied 2/27 as most of it had slid. I found good snow on the east-facing ridge above Lower Saddle, and then took a very high entrance into High Yellow Gully, which had good snow, but was mostly tracked out, except close to tree near the bottom. I went up Summit and did the hike again, this time taking the wind-buff and making some tracks on south-facing slope to Sherwood lift, which I had not ridden for at least a couple of years.
My friends finally called that they were on Summit so I said I would meet them there. From the top of Sherwood, I went left and caught the middle part of High Yellow Gully, then cut right into less tracked Lower Our Father. They took a long hike to Estelle Bowl so I had to wait about 10 minutes. We did D-6 chute into The Sisters. There was still some lightly tracked snow to be found, but lower down it was getting sun-affected. Next time up we skied the Palisades, an area that I had not been in this year that always looked inviting from the High Traverse. It was mostly packed out. I continued into Hot Wheels Gully, a natural half-pipe that my son always enjoyed that I had crossed through a couple of times after making some more tracks below not-running Yellow Chair.
We went up Scott and did three different entrances into west-facing Scott Chute, which had good packed snow, as chair had run previous day. Our final run on Scott chair, we headed north to Gentian Gully and Lower Forty. It was tracked out, but at least the Table Rock exit was well-covered compared to on 2/27. We did one more run off Summit, finding deep tracked powder off Peril Ridge and then came down skier’s right of the packed Face, where I took a narrow chute between rocks. My friends thought it was getting too soft as temperatures were climbing so we went in for a beer about 2 pm. I had one, a couple of them had two and we all left Alpine about 2:45, but I was not done skiing for the day.
My Tahoe Card Alpine ticket got me on the Funitel at Squaw, where I had my second beer. I went up Gold Coast and straight-lined to Silverado, which I knew closed at 3:30. I got one run starting on Land Bridge, then getting some lightly tracked to skier’s right. When I got off the chair, signs said Silverado was closed, but I didn’t see anything about Shirley Lake. So rather than poling across the flats to Gold Coast, I took a fast run down Shirley Lake. Ski patrollers were the only ones there and they were not happy as that lift also closes early. I went up Siberia just before 4 and took one run under the chair getting close to the cliffs to find some untracked. Then I went down Racers, into Mountain Run and Spring Bowl, then skiers left side of the valley, where snow was getting sticky. My watch counted 23K at Alpine and 5.5K at Squaw.
I have some pictures, but there was new snow overnight and I need to pickup my skis from getting free tune I won last month then be back at the cabin at 3 to meet cable guy so no time to work on them. Then I heard on Tahoe TV at 7:45 that passholders get early up today (Wednesday 4/4) and get to load at 8:15 so I ran for the door before I could find Internet acces to post this. After skiing, while waiting for cable guy, I had chance to work on pictures so here they are:
