First and seconds down Gunsight this morning. 20 inches in the gut of it. Over the old base.

Tasty November treats. It was over the head.

Ohhh.....but you're forgetting that it's still way below the statistical norm of 28 bazillion data points and the spreadsheets of those no where near Alta.

We're also above the national statistical norm for ice cream consumption on an annual per capita basis.

BTW kids, Alta opens for the season tomorrow.

So no uphill access in the morning or after operations are closed for the day ?? Alta is on FS land right ?? How is that policy enforced ?

Thanks for the info

We have to go through this yet again?
Alta is mostly on FS land via a land use lease, and as such, the covenants of the lease grant the lessor certain rights and privileges, one of which includes controlling access. Skinning up when the resort is in operation is considered theft of services and a class B misdemeanor. Any Alta employee can call the Alta Marshal's office if they observe a violation. These laws and conditions are by no means unique to Alta. In their basic form, they apply to any ski resort on NFS land.

How strictly it's enforced is a matter of local / individual resort policy. Alta is fairly relaxed about enforcement, but from their viewpoint there's a safety issue, both at the end of the day with groomers and snow machines wandering about and, especially, in the morning when they're doing avi control work. If you were caught, you'd be asked politely but very firmly to leave.

Sunday was a chilly, sunny day in the mountains. The next few days won't be too much different. Monday will be a little warmer. Winds will pick up a little into midweek, and some clouds will move in...but nothing that contains snow. Sorry! It looks like our next chance of snow will come early next week, but prediction this far out is shoddy at best. Continue to stay tuned! Might I recommend pulling the bike and climbing gear out for the week?

That's from Utahskiweather.com. I know it's way early but I'll be out for Christmas and I'm a tad bit worried at this point.

Alta will close November with 21 inches snowfall after 42 in October. Similar in some respects to 2 years ago with 53 in October and 21.5 in November. These are the 2nd and 3rd lowest Novembers of the past 43 seasons. There are differences vs. 2 years ago, when there were only 4.5 inches Nov. 1-26, so not much base when 2 feet came over 4 days ending 12/1. The big dumps started 12/7, Alta was 88% open on 12/16 and the rest of the Cottonwood areas were 80% open by 12/21.

The current base is likely better than 2 years ago; certainly that's the impression from reports filed here. Though we haven't seen any from last weekend, probably not worth the effort by local standards.

The odds for Christmas are still good for Alta. Average December snowfall is 98 inches, 2/3 of seasons get at least 70 inches, and 4/5 of seasons get at least 50 inches. The dry November has probably raised the odds of significant terrain restrictions at Utah areas outside the Cottonwoods at Christmas to at least 50%.

standards were just fine . alta ski patrol opened baldy on sunday main chute only . two full length collins gulchs ( classic pureness) smooth steep and really fast - real honest skiing a few stones mixed with the snow but nothing sticking out double fall lines abound in there this time of year.skied acouple of runs with amy & marc in the morning as a warm up . alta is preping the sugarloaf lift for service this weekend . a.s.p. opened up the main run under the chair for skiing with a couple of different ways at the bottom back to the chair base down albion basin to the rope tow on main street to collins chair that's got too be all of three miles around or real close. skied at the bird on saturday afternoon till close. some what dissapointed in snowbird they seem to lack the drive to push the mtn. open . the peruvian gulch is closed to the general public but the hundreds of tracks some what boggle the mind on who it's really closed to. could be elitest could be filming could be seven summits club no it could't be them fourteen thousand is the basic membership you'd have to buy the big dollar membership to get the closed area package included . but anyways it certainly looks wonderful from the tram. regulator johnson has a nice base but your quickly back to the crowds coming up the hill on gadzoom chair from there down to big emmma it's nuts . chinese downhill on big emmma is challenging even at the width of that trail. bass highway was ajoke back to the tram plaza lack of drive to cover the road down the west face of race hill as soon as you got around the corner there's plenty of snow. my salution pointum less edge turned sideways less exposure to catching something.

Thanks for the local update. Bass Hwy was a minefield during the lean Christmas week of 1986-87. If it were me I'd stick to Alta (and maybe Brighton) for awhile until the base builds up some more.
