Day 4 in Zion

Feeling a bit worked from skiing deep powder for the last 3 days with our transplanted local rippers, we were relieved to be at Alta at a slower pace. It was a very cold bluebird day. Barely hit 20 degrees at the base. It was nice temp for hiking up to Catherines and Devil's Castle.

Supreme opened for the first time since the last dump of pixie dust and there were plenty of fresh lines left for us in Catherines and in the Supreme bowl that kept us busy through lunchtime. We rode the lift with a local transplant (originally from DC) and he turned us onto his secret stash off Supreme which yeilded us fresh turns throughout the morning. The patrol was blasting Devil's Castle and the bombs reverberated through the valley . Once it was open what had been a minor crowd at Supreme dwindled. We took a few more off Supreme since there was still fresh snow in there (thanks to our new friend). We took lunch at 1:30. After lunch we made the trek all the way out the upper traverse of Devil's Castle. It was so cold up there I never broke a sweat on the hike up. It was pretty tracked out by the time we got there, but we found some deep turns in between. We finished off with a run down Tombstone. Got done in time to catch the bus. Another day in the Promised Land of Powder.

Sounds like the Sharon SLC jinx is over, though the lack of photos is upsetting.

Is Admin the only Zion FTOer out there who actually uses his/her camera?

the photos will not be ready until the weekend. I don't have a computer or USB or an SD card reader so I can't get my photos up. Sorry.

Looks like we are taking today off from skiing. It is very cold and windy and we are totally worked and need a day to recover. We could have squeezed out another day but felt it would be worthwhile to rest up for our last 2 days. We went strong for 4 days of deep powder skiing. Our bodies are screaming for us to take a break. We had planned to go to Snowbasin today but none of us were motivated to drive in the current snowstorm to ski in cold and windy conditions with blowing snow and low visibility. If it was our first or second day, you know we'd be out there, but we'd be getting diminishing returns on our skiing with today's conditions.

Thanks for the post, Sharon. I'm quite envious, especially as I sit in my office and look out the window at heavy rain and 38 degrees here. I'm afraid the skiing is going to be terrible here for quite a while. We're going to need a few good snow storms to get the conditions back to good. The only consolation is that I'll be in Utah in ten days !!!

Devil's Castle. It was so cold up there I never broke a sweat on the hike up.

Now that is cold. It was fairly chilly on Saturday when I made that same hike but I definitely broke a sweat. Good to see the storm cycle is not letting up. If you are going to break a no-powder Jinx, this trip of getting all powder is the way to do it!

Pam is sweaty Betty. I've been cool as a cucumber. I'm liking how dry it is here. Beats the damp chill of the east.

I'm generally in the same situation as Sharon. I can often file reports while on trips, but the pictures don't get up until I get home.

Barely hit 20 degrees at the base.
i don't think we've seen 20 degrees in 8 days of skiing in Canada so far. It's been below 10 as often as above.
