Alta 7/8/08

Third real night in town, second day of work, figured I'd better get up into the hills this evening.

Parked around 6:10 this evening next to gold miners to two guys and gals coming down, with big grins on their faces. Guess they'd skied main in the buff and cleared out all the rocks. That settled it, I'd better get after it myself. Topped out around 7:45 and back to the car by 8:30. It is great to be in Utah.

I'd be down for another round tomorrow if any of you locals deem it worthy for your higher standards.

Interesting time of day to be doing that.
Remember that it's still light at 9:30 at this time of year, thanks to being so far west in the time zone. PDT is only 120 miles to the west at the Nevada line.

Nope, it's not. But don't forget that you're a local now. Just a new local. You'll get jaded too soon enough.

jaded soon enough fer sure. it didn't take me long. once i realized i could ski untracked all day every day with a little bit of walkin, i didn't even ski at the resort but maybe once a week during serious puke fests out there. no reason to ski anything but untracked out there. would you be there for any other reason? not me but, i too was jaded then i got bored.

Tisk tisk.

I'm up for spring/summer assaults as long as the snow is good.

Can't wait for all the snow though.

I know about the light. The snow surface would be my concern, especially in DFU territory like Main Chute. There can be a window of improved surface during the cooling part of the day, but it tends to be shorter and/or less pleasant then the one during the warming part.

This was best demonstrated to me by a guide at Jackson Hole in March 2001. The lower part of Jackson was in its usual spring crud phase, but he took us down the Hobacks at 4PM and the snow had set up quite well.

The snow was complete money. Four had skied it before me and buffed it out well, it was really damned good. Way better than I thought (in main chute proper).

I don't think that salida will become jaded like you guys? Hell, the amount of amazing days skiing he got this year and still going back for more in the May rain tells you that he just loves to get out and ski, no matter what.

Way to go salida. =D>

Really? Revisit this statement in a few years.
Or maybe he'll become jaded like icelandic because the West isn't the East.

Come on patrick, it's july and I'm still coming back for more. :)

I'd just rather go skiing that hang about. Nothing to do, figured I'd take a stab. Turned into a beautiful night.

Surely more to come for this weekend. Either wolverine or the uintas. We'll see.

get it now while you have it to yerself cuz in the winter it's a whole different story. in the winter you can dodge the powderbirds, flying hippies and the non tourers. the bc is definitely where it's at, where you are.
have fun and keep it goin.

Once you get into full-on summer, confined, skier-packed lines are usually your best bet. Otherwise you tend to get the suncups and other irregularites. Much like top of Mammoth 2 and 3 years ago.

What he said. There are sectors of Alta that get tracked out within 20 minutes of the rope drop and getting off the Tram next door on a big powder day can be a life risking experience.

I would hope I'll be able to sniff out the less crowded areas. That or suck it up and earn it. Either way I'm sure I'll manage.

There has to be some places where even the locals don't get at the 600 some odd inches every year! :)

There are. Look at all of our reports from this past season when we were scoring in-bounds freshies at 2 pm. You just have to learn the patterns and the strategies, young Jedi.

or just move back east where finding the fresh is really never an issue at most places, you know what i'm talkin bout, or just ski solitude when lcc is open or deer valley on any pow day. you'll do just fine and make us proud.

surfs comin up which is why i can't sleep right now!

The problem with Solitude is that one big dump days the best part or it (Honeycomb) is usually closed for avie danger....not to mention the slow lifts and the fact that even if honeycomb is open its short shots and a LONG way back, again on the slow lifts..

Don't get me wrong..that place is fun, but.......

Those are the days for Solitude and Powder Mt.
