Alta April 14

You know, for all the whining and teeth-gnashing from visitors fearing that they're Utah ski vacation would be a total wipeout, we're now above average on snowfall for the year at 510".

The skiing was good, but not as good as I found in colorado. That being said, it was entirely luck.

That's interesting because I have friends up in summit county CO and they said this is one of the worst winters they can remember.

Alta's 510 includes 40 from October that wasn't particularly relevant. Nonetheless 470 as of April 14 is 98% of normal, and the 102 inches in the first half of April is impressive by any standard.

Summit County's early season was the worst since 1980-81. None of the areas crossed the 100 inch snowfall mark until February. A-Basin was less than half open until Feb. 22. March was definitely the best month for Summit County this season.

I find it funny that people would think that 400 or so inches would be a wipeout.....my little hole in the wall got only 150 inches which was incredible and made for a great season...yeah 100 of those inches fell in 3 days..but still.....utah always delivers!

yesterday was great ZERO CROWDS. was about 3rd chair up and even that was only 3. Couple completely untracked runs in Ballroom/shoulder. 4th down tombstone trees. They were loading the mid station right from the beginning of the day. Easy to get quick ballroom/shoulders. At about 10:15 I decided to do a high notch (but just to yellow trail) since they hadnt opened the lower traverse yet. Very damp already at that hour. Back to ballroom/shoulder where, by this time, it was tracked out, but still provided pockets and the snow was considerably softer.

Didnt hit the Castle, but i'd expect it to ski much like ballroom/shoulder did. All in all a good day. Felt like a "true local" 9:15 til 11:15. O:)

Maybe not always, but there is a large margin for adverse deviation. Through mid-January Utah was as low percentage wise (<60% of normal) as Summit County CO. Nonetheless Alta was close to full operation by Dec. 22 and the skiing was more than acceptable on an absolute scale. Some places took longer to become skiable. The Upper Cirque at Snowbird was not accessible to those of us unwilling to take to the air until after the late January dumps.

The number of seasons where Alta was marginal at Christmas stands at two, 1976-77 and 1980-81, a track record exceeded only by Grand Targhee.

Not true -- the Rat's Nest was negotiable as an entrance.

Just remember that I will always have an eastern view of things,,,which means that if I can ski by December ...on anything...I'm good to go. I've started my season on 1/2 a run of manmade at Hunter...

It snowed a bunch while I was in Colorado, but only measly 2 inches while I was in Utah. Like I said it was just plain old luck. If I had done my trip in reverse I would have been slammed in Utah.

That's my ski pal and neighbor George Goodman. He is a sick skier! Born in DC, College in Maine, moved to Crested Butte for 2 years, then moved again so he could ski some real pow! Obviously, he ended up here in Park City, that being said he like myself splits time say 50/50 between the Wasatch back and LCC. If you ever see a car in utah whose license plate reads "ISKIPOW" or "FREESKIER" you know your following George or his wife.

thats tele jon out on chartrouse nose gettin it !! fourteen inches reported on tues. morning ha ha where we couldn't find anything shallower than about knee deep anywhere . went through keyhole down to snowbird fantastic ! upon arrival at the plaza bobd the other one tele jon & i found that there was as many people standing in line for the tram as there were people skiing at alta one trip up the tram and back to alta no need to stand around when there's no one at alta . besides snowbird didn't have alot open. alta didn't have everything open either but there was more room to roam. really it's just now becoming a normal looking season at least from an astetic look at the hill every thing looks now the way it should have about six or seven weeks ago. of course it does no one any good that's in business in the canyon the tourists are gone for the most part. ( good for the locals though i don't think anyone will dispute that it's been kick a-- skiing the past month ). day 61
