Alta / Bird 12 / 31

Today was less skiing and more .......trolling than anything else.......and I came up empty handed. In fact, today could be nicknamed "dodge a family day"........yeah.....it was that good.

Started out over near Gadzoom at around 10:15.......it was the normal hardpack with a few places to put the edges in and carve. It's been about 6 days since it has last snowed and I felt like I was back skiing in SoCal (lots of people stopped in the middle of the run, hardpack, a bit thin in many spots).....

Went over to Mineral to try to get some groomers........same snow conditions. Light was a bit flat with the clouds and it was all pretty skiied over. Off-piste was not much fun.

Went over to Alta to scope out the scene........same deal...Devil's Elbow was......well.....the normal holiday s* show. The name of the game was : avoid getting clobbered....

Took a few runs over at Collins.....saw Shannon...which was arguably the best part of the day. About a 2 minute wait in the singles line. About a 5 min wait in the normal line.

Figured I'd hit up Supreme in order to avoid any lift lines at all -- no such luck. Fairly busy in the Supreme area.

Went back up to Sugarloaf and skiied a few runs -- then back to Mineral. By then it had started snowing.....and visibility was starting to become impaired.

Took the tunnel for the first time -- kinda cool.

Went over to Peruvian lift to scope it out -- took a few runs over there -- by then there was maybe 1" of fluff on the trails, but it didn't really help much. App 40 knot gusts up top .... Still surprisingly busy on the trails.

At 3:15 hit up Gadzoom --by then it the crowds were slightly thinning. Skiied to 4 pm.......

Went over to Alta to check out the Torch Light Parade...............Peruvian Lodge bar was nearly empty.....so hit up GMD. Got a beer and sat near the fire........nice touch. Bought a ticket for torch light parade however, the line appeared to be 15 minutes long, so I just kicked it near the bonfire and watched the torches come down........lots of families......nice event.

Went down the hill at 6:15 and caught the Snowbird torchlight parade coming down the hill which was cool........

We need more snow......pray for snow!!!

I got to the tram plaza at just after nine this morning and had to hustle to make it on to the second tram of the day, there was no line whatsoever. Trams all day were below 50 passengers, I've been amazed at how vacant it's been this holiday season.

The groomers are busy but once you get off the trade routes the crowds dissipate. First thing in the morning is the best, those pesky snow guns have usually left streaks of velvet downwind of their placements. The glaze is gone in the morning as well, it's only after the crowds arrive that it starts to get a little firm. 9-10 in the morning is the best time to catch the cord, when the snow years suck you have to do what you have to. I'm quickly finding where the wind seems to push sift every night, that always makes the morning more enjoyable as well.

Hopefully tonight's forecasted 2-4 inches comes through and gives us a tiny bit of refresh.
