Alta Bird 2/28/2014

Started out on Wildcat. Took a number of runs to the west near the Snowbird boundary. Not bottomless, but definitely a solid foot of fresh. Not the 3% dry Utah snow we all know love but more like a California powder -- a little on the heavier side. Still, quite nice. I took about 4-5 runs on Wildcat. It went pretty quickly IMO.

Kept looking over at Collins for the line to die down -- never really seemed to die down. Even Wildcat was long -- 10 minutes wait from the back. Longest lines I've seen all season, easily. The singles line for Collins was longer than I've ever seen it. Truly incredible.

Was hoping I"d see the gate over for Westward Ho, but nevertheless it never opened. I wanted to get over to Supreme to ski Catherines but didnt want to wait in the Collins line so I took the rope tow to Albion Lift. 5 minute wait on Albion which is unheard of.....looked over at Sugarloaf lift and it was packed......decided to take Cecret to Supreme Lift. Supreme lift was a s* show.........I can't stand lines........turned back and went up Sugarloaf.

Took Sugarloaf to Glory Hole. GLory hole skied quite nicely -- although that was it. There were some slim pickens on the Backside but......not too much to speak of. Skiied all the way down to Albion again.

Albion to Sugarloaf to Mineral Basin. Could not believe there was a line at Baldy -- I dont think I've ever seen a line on Baldy ever. Didn't want to touch Mineral Basin with a 10 foot pole. Line was packed.

Went over to Collins and got some fairly nice lines off of the high T. Did a few laps and decided to call it a day at around 1:15.

I know Admin wasn't calling for a shit show.......but it certainly was a shit show IMO. Cars were lined on LCC ........I heard there was an issue getting up the canyon and took some folks >2 hrs from Park City. I seemed to miss it.

By the time 1:15 rolled around it was getting quite windy (40 mph gusts) and very flat light. I saw the full parking lot and cars lined up on LCC and decided I didnt want a Big Bear type of experience so I jetted. I definitely think the red snake will appear at 4 pm.

Looking forward to storm riding tomorrow...........

I just got here. Clearly it was busier than I've seen it all winter. LCC road is parked from Snowbird entry through entry 4 and up the Bypass Road to 300 yards past the heliport. It's mostly died down now and Collins is 30 seconds.

the lines went to nothing around 12:45 when the winds picked up ........hopefully the wind is doing some good work for ya up there to enjoy a few laps

Sounds like half of SLC decided to take a snow day today! I guess powder days have been scarce enough this season that any opportunity is pounced upon. I'm guessing tomorrow may be worse since it's a weekend and more snow is coming tonight (however the winds tomorrow may scare some folks off).

I presume Snowbird frontside (Tram, Peruvian) would be even worse on a crowd day like today?

A lot of folks won't ski on a storm day - a lot will. The winds can definitely be an issue, both in scaring some off and in lift operation. I'd also suspect that tomorrow much/most/all of the major gated terrain will be closed.

Didn't mean to send that post yet. Snowbird was fan fucking tastic. Never had lines as fresh as I had there today. We got there at 830 and got third tram, so it was crowded, but even when Peruvian/Mineral were closed for an hour to open, nothing was truly horrific. And anyways, the perfect snow made up for it. When they opened Peruvian/Cirque, I had a completely virgin line on Shot 1 Route 5. I felt like a big mountain rider ripping huge powder turns. I got freshies on Blackjack! Blackjack! And then as I rode it out, I looked over to my right and saw cars stacked up in the direction of Alta. Peruvian lines got a bit crazy in late morning, but none of the runs were junk shows.

We made an ill-advised decision to take carpet out to Mineral when it opened. Nice, decent run down High Stakes, then BAM, easily the largest group of people in a lift line I've ever seen. 25 minutes and we didn't move an inch. We finally gave in and joined the singles lines and got the eff out of there. No biggie, grabbed another Cirque shot and were the first two down one of the Gad chutes. Then proceeded over to the Get Serious chutes which were also abandoned.

We rode bell to bell, grabbing last tram to hit the Tower 3 chutes. Shared a lift with some athletes competing in the Free Ride World Tour. Seriously, I have no complaints about today. It was awesome.

Our group took an early lunch and when we came out at 12:20 the lines had evaporated. Great skiing yesterday .
We are now inter lodged with what looks to be about 10" of graupel on the ground and occasional strong wind gusts. Update...inter lodge just lifted!
