Alta January 10

The last major piece of the Alta puzzle fell into place this morning as the Castle opened all the way to the wall. Amazingly, there were almost no takers despite creamy untracked powder. The only unopened terrain is off Baldy (East Baldy, Little Chute/ Dogleg, Perla's, and Upper Shoulder). And while we certainly could use more snow, the skiing is pretty good considering it snowed more in two weeks last March/ April than it has all season.

Alta/Bird have been skiing quite spectacularly lately despite the low snowfall totals. Pretty much everything at each resort is open. Have to watch out for those pesky rocks, but all in all the skiing is still great.

I think one of the main reasons you didnt see the normal devils castle line out the traverse on its opening day was because most days that line is comprised of locals, and since there hasnt been any big dumps a lot of the spoiled locals stay home. It also has to do with the fact that we've got such a low snowpack and that area is very prone to sharks with a snowpack like this..I didnt see the need to veture out and potentially hurt myself or my skis. I already found out what a low snowpack we have in the Supreme bowl area a couple weeks back...rock bands and skis/body dont mix TRUST ME.... 8-[

Not many locals because of the lack of new snow, most of the hikers were on the first lap for Main Chute, Castle had been partially opened the day before so nobody was paying attention. All in all a perfect storm. Well, actually no storm.

Usually safe to go to the wall and ski the gut/ didn't hit any rocks. Certainly a good idea to look for them, though.

Some windbuff today. Everyone (all ten of us out today) was skiing the Ballrooom ropeline.

Good to see that at least one person is still skiing in Utah.

Oh, we're out. I know that Skidog/Tele Jon/Bobby Danger were out for the weekend. I went up to PCMR on Saturday for a few runs but haven't gotten around to posting it. I've had a very busy week and spare time's been short. I was fighting off a cold last week and didn't have much energy, plus I had other tasks to complete on Sunday so I never made it up then.

I'll be out on the hill for this weekend with Crocker. True to form for his typical visits it'll be high and dry this weekend, with a return to stormy conditions almost the minute he leaves.

I love how he gasbags about the importance of flexibility and waiting as late as possible to book... then ignores his own advice and goes to UT during dry spells.

I know... Iron Blosam this, Iron Blosam that.

I considered deferring this trip but:
1) I've had only 4 days and need some more mileage before the 2 weeks in Canada starting next weekend.
2) If I stayed home there would not have been worthwhile skiing this weekend, but it now looks likely there will be plenty of SoCal skiing in February.
