Day 23.
Sunny, and cooooold this morning. Marc_C's Jeep thermo read 0ºF in the parking lot, and my truck read 9 (huh?), but the thermo atop Collins read 0ºF, too. It felt sooooo good to reach the sun at the top of the chair, and we immediately headed to Sugarloaf to stay in that sun. Marc_C asserts that one of the first things to go after moving here from the Northeast is tolerance for cold, and I believe it. We headed to Alf's after only one run to let things warm up a tad as we sipped hot chocolate.
As a result, snow was rather stiff off-piste today, and we were both rather tired and therefore not really much in the mood to hike for the goods. The goods were there for the taking, however, as Alta opened the Baldy Chutes and everything else accessible off of the hike. Devil's Castle and East Castle remained closed while we were there, as bombing out there continued occasionally.
Wanting to stay in the sun, we went through the Sugar Shack gate and into Snowbird, opting for a northwest-facing chute at the southeastern corner of the ski area boundary. It was skied up and stiff, yet fun, and we decided to stay at Snowbird for a bit and rode up the Mineral Basin Express. From there, we headed out the Mid-Cirque Traverse all the way to P-Tex Point, picking the freshest snow we could find there and in the trees between Dalton's and Mach Schnell to get to Snowbird Center, where we stopped for an early lunch. By now, it had warmed into a gorgeous day.
Back up the Tram, and out to Powder Paradise, back up Baldy Express, and a fast cruiser down Mambo called it a day for both of us. Riding up Baldy Express we spied figure-11 tracks down a hairball line through the Argentiere Cliffs that was narrower than a hypodermic needle. At Sugarloaf Pass, we noted that the Sugarloaf Chair was down, but the gatekeeper advised that it was expected to be back up by 1:30. Don't know if that happened.
We bumped into Bob Dangerous at GMD, who advised that he and his buds visiting from the East Coast took two laps through the untracked in Living the Dream, and advised that it was sweet, sweet, sweet.
