Day 29: I'm running out of superlatives this season.

Today was powder day 19. Good number, for we had 19 inches of additional snow today. It just won't stop snowing. Bob Dangerous has had 13 of his last 15 days as powder days. Today, thigh deep. Hip deep. Even waist deep in places.

With Supreme and Cecret closed all day due to avalanche risk, and Sugarloaf generally being a rather nasty place to be, the hordes congregated at Collins and Wildcat. We stuck to Wildcat, and while the line late morning got up to 10 minutes or so it dissipated at lunch time as the road would again close at 1 pm for afternoon control work mid-canyon. Most of us opted to stay, although by that point Bob Dangerous had split for Snowbird and Pat beat the closure to head home.

That left Sharon, her friend Pam, Amy, Tele Jon and yours truly. Lap after lap out Wildcat yielded the goods, but it was busy -- at one point I looked up at the first drop off Wildcat Ridge and there were more bodies there than I've ever before seen. It was a zoo! We therefore did silly things like ski down to the Bypass Road and catch a UTA bus back, or head down upper-upper-Who Dunit to the heli-pad, where we caught a ride in the back of a gracious pickup driver's truck. That run, at 2:30 pm, believe it or not didn't have a single track in it. Not one. Nada. What amazed me was that Hidden Peak called over to open the Keyhole gate when everything else was closed.

Snowbanks along side the LCC road are immense -- they even drove the giant snowthrower as far down the road as the A Gate. Driving down canyon is starting to feel like driving down a tunnel. We're having one hell of a year!

Thanks for the video. Conditions look beyond "awesome" (and I hate using that word). Nice turns, Sharon !!! I'll be in PC in less than two weeks. Let's hope the snow continues.

From this morning's avi report:
Impressive storm, with very impressive snow totals before frontal passage and after. In the crosshairs of the strong southwesterly flow, the Park City, Provo, Ogden, and the upper reaches of Big Cottonwood Canyon raked in the early snowfall with totals now reaching 25-30” in Ogden and Provo, and 30-40” in upper BCC and the Park City mountains. Little Cottonwood sits at 33” for a storm total. Post frontal, most areas picked 5-10” overnight, with upper Little Cottonwood picking up 14”. Overnight densities are of the explosive 5% smoke-variety. Winds are 15-20mph from the northwest and mostly confined to the ridgelines. Temps plummeted again to the low single digits. Light, but sustained snowfall should continue for much of the day.

Good stuff. Glad to see you made it out and are feeling better.

Kind of unrelated, but what format does your video take? what do you use to process your video, etc... My new Digital camera takes 720P in .mov (quicktime). Looking for something good, mostly basic and cheap to use to cut/splice, add sound, etc... Also might be getting a bunch of video from an HDD based HD level camcorder in a week or so from our group's trip to UT and will want to process that as well (Haven't looked in General forum yet to see if you already answered this topic/question).

"Good" and "cheap" are somewhat mutually exclusive terms when it comes to video editing software. I used Ulead Media Studio Pro for years, mostly because that's what I learned on and could use with my eyes closed. Alas, the work-around for using the latest version of MSP on Vista, well...didn't, and I have a new Vista machine that I bought with the best specs possible for the high resource demands of video editing.

The machine came with Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 pre-installed. It has turned out to be very buggy for me, though, and I'm not pleased. I fought through it last night to get that video done, then right before going to bed I downloaded a 30-day trial of Adobe Premiere (the full version) and took a look - holy s&!t, that proggy looks complicated! I'll play around with it a bit before deciding whether or not I'll keep looking for something else.

For me, shooting video is a compromise between quality and convenience. My still camera, a Canon S3 IS shoots 640x480 MJPEG AVIs at 30fps, which is what I used for this video. I have 2 DV cameras, but that means capturing the video from tape, an extra step, and carrying around a second camera.

Nice Marc, Sharon. Nice tunes to go with the slow, relaxed turns. What artist/song?

I forget what powder skiing feels like. It's been too long (weeks). Might have to get on a plane before the winter is over.

As you're no doubt aware, your problem is Vista - the Windoze ME of a new decade. You might want to consider upgrading to XP.

Typical of all Adobe products - they're targeted more towards the professional, or at least someone who uses the product almost every day. Their philosophy has always been a very full-featured, long term ease of use, not necessarily ease of learning.

not to turn this into a computer threat...
I just ordered a imac..rumor has it the video software that comes with the machine is pretty good. time will tell..

absolutely love all the videos you are posting

Thats it. My finger is on the plane ticket trigger. Trying to round up the troops!

Pull that trigger... Read Sharon's post for her day #1 on 2/2. Granted I only did a long weekend not a full week, but that was the "worst" of my 3 days in Utah... \:D/ =D>

Yes, definitely pull that trigger. I was there from the 19-25th for my yearly pilgrimage. So good this year that I've sold my sold soul to the devil (o.k. would you believe to my wife? I had to barter a few good things .....) and am hopefully planning another trip (long weekend) in March!!!

Hi, it's not John but his wife Nancy sitting here back in CT and going thru powder-withdrawal. Got home at 1 AM having spent 5 unreal days at The Bird with two girlfriends. John told me you were skiing off the Gad Chair last Wednesday, sorry to have missed you. Today's video captured it all ! If there is a place beyond heaven it has to be in Little Cottonwood Canyon these days. When the weather guy says "another 10 inches coming tonight ", nobody even flinches. I think we got close to 4 feet over the five days we were there. Unfortunately we were forced to leave yesterday before noon to get out before the road closure, and only got in a few morning runs. The snow was coming down so fast that it was near waist deep even off the Wilbere Lift.

Have to pass along that I was invited to take the 7:30 tram and "first tracks" with Junior on Saturday. Not being a morning person this was quite the achievement for me (and one that John can't believe I did). All I can say is the experience of biting off some 3000 vertical with the sun coming up and being in a small group being lead by Junior is about as near to an epiphany that I have had.

So I have gained some good powder form since we met a month ago at Alta - maybe it was due to the mid-fats I demo'd or some new found Go-For-It attitude . . .

John will be back in March and I will "settle" for the trails of northern VT later this month. Glad to see your made a speedy recovery - hope I can make it out next winter.

Nancy Babyak - the "improved powder babe"

Pull the trigger now! It is sick! Today was deeper than yesterday. We've skied 3 says w upwards of 4' of snow. will try 2 post a tr as soon as I get a full-sized keyboard .

Way to go, Nancy!! Now we'll get to drag you into the loose stuff next time! You sure timed this trip right - I'll glad you and the girls enjoyed yourself.
