Day 29: "Auntie Em! Auntie Em!"

I don't know where today's wind came from, given that there's significant high pressure overhead, but trust me...it was there.

Getting blasted while riding Collins...and not in a good way.

It was beyond annoying; it ventured into the downright unpleasant range. Areas of wind sift were hard to find but smooth and fun when you found them. But it wasn't enough to make up for getting blasted by the wind in the first place.

We had a huge group today of 13 that splintered often. mrgskier made his first foray into Alta territory this winter, and rdwore is finally back in town for the winter. Scotty came out from DC on a last-minute flight for a three-day visit.

Huge plumes of snow billow off of Baldy. Note the huge holiday crowds at 1 p.m.

Collins Gulch

North Rustler, and Sugarloaf Peak beyond.

Backside and Ballroom/Baldy Shoulder remained closed all day (but ASP has now opened Supreme Bowl, so all that's left is Devil's Castle/East Castle and the Baldy Chutes). Just before noon Snowbird closed all of Mineral Basin. By 1:30 p.m. I'd had enough of the wind that seemed to be getting even stronger, and split.

Perlas slid to main Street natural. Main st was closed on our way back from skiing pure fun wind sift off chartrusse nose area off sugarloaf. Winds didn't bother me much.

That's an impressive wind plume off Baldy. Baldy usually protects the chair rides from high winds, but obviously not this time. I'm guessing wind was from an unusual direction.

We are used to this sort of thing at Mammoth. Figuring out direction to locate the wind sift is the key. One of the best wind sift runs I've ever skied was Highboy Jan. 13-14, 2014 though.
