Days 23-24.
Sat., Jan. 10: "What's your vector, Victor?"
After this week's well-above-normal temperatures, followed by increasing clouds on Saturday morning I was convinced that this day would be spent on the groomers. Apparently everyone else did, too, and there were some skiers descending along some really random vectors. For once the human slalom wasn't limited to Devil's Elbow.
The shocker of the day, however, resulted from some very creative route-finding. By leaving Rock 'n Roll via the Outer Limits gate and following a mile-long gradually ascending traverse we were able to find honest-to-goodness untracked powder. In-bounds. Two weeks since the last snowfall.
It was so good that we did it five times.
Sunday, Jan. 11: Dust on crust.
Three inches of new snow topped a base that set up rock hard overnight. Banks of thick fog ebbed and flowed across upper Little Cottonwood Canyon -- at times visibility was quite good, while at others you often couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Sometimes both in the same run, multiple times.
Once again, however, Sunday delivered another surprise. This time it was out Piss Pass to lower Gunsight/Greeley Hill. Here the low angle skied extraordinarily well. We also got absolute first tracks across Backside to Susie's Trees.
No photos from the weekend.
