Day 30: More freshies, with more to come.
I think that the forecast for cold temperatures scared a lot of people away today. In reality, it was only about 2 degrees colder this morning than yesterday (-6F at the top, +2F at the bottom) but without yesterday's breeze it actually felt a bit warmer. Tomorrow, though, should be even colder.
Now, for those used to skiing in Alberta or even Vermont that may not sound that bad. But for around here that's damned cold, so we all bundled up. In reality my body was rather comfortable today but the snow was extremely slow. I'll be tuning the skis tonight with a cold snow wax.
You could just see the cold in the air today:
Spent my morning with Skidog, Telejon, AmyZ and TheOtherAmy. Bobby Danger was MIA (found out later he went into work for a few hours). In the morning things skied exceedingly well, and we started out again on Wildcat; why not stay where the deeper snow is? We rode Sugarloaf to check out Mineral Basin, but it looked pretty well hammered even early in the morning so we didn't bother to venture across the border to Snowbird early on. Greeley Hill delivered the goods, and even right before lunch North Greeley was skiing mighty fine. It's the first that I've scrambled through the choke in North Greeley proper this season and the coverage was actually better than expected getting down through the cliff band. And of course the Secret Spot Right, which held a mere four tracks in late morning.
We lunched with friends Jon and Theresa at the Rustler before returning to the slopes, and TheOtherAmy called it quits. By now, though, the temperatures were taking their toll and the skied-up stuff was starting to stiffen. So what else to do? Find more untracked.
Secret Spot Left was still just that way, even at 2:45 p.m.
We finally got down to Snowbird.
Bobby and AmyZ stayed there. Telejon went back for another helping, and I headed home. The Wasatch foothills are unaccustomed to receiving 2.5 feet of snow in one shot, so now that the clouds have finally cleared the slopes above Salt Lake neighborhoods are showing tracks literally all over the place.
There will be more untracked snow available at Alta tomorrow, for neither Ballroom/Baldy Shoulder nor Backside opened today.
