Day 1: In the bag.

Well, knock me over with a feather: Mrs. Admin wanted to go skinning today. Who am I to try to discourage that?

So we joined the hordes climbing Alta today. Skiers, split boarders, snowshoers and sledders all. The place was buzzing.

For her first AT experience I stuck Mrs. Admin on some 177cm G3 Reverends mounted with Silvretta Pures that I had laying around -- a nice and light combo. Her Tecnica Cochise 90W boots already have an AT walk switch. I wanted to keep things easy, so we drove past the Wildcat base and parked at Albion, with a plan to skin to the top of Sunnyside.

Much to my surprise, Mrs. Admin couldn''t stop talking about how much she enjoyed it. We ascended, and then descended via Crooked Mile which was rather narrow in spots where they've made snow. The descent would've been much more pleasant in Collins Gulch, where runs like Corkscrew are already covered wall-to-wall.

After skiing we connected with AmyZ and Bobby Danger for a beer in the Wildcat parking lot. They had ascended Collins Gulch; AmyZ stopped at Harold's Cabin, while Bobby continued to Germania Pass and descended via Devil's Elbow to Home Run in Albion Basin.

Mrs. Admin is already bugging me about going to Collins Gulch tomorrow. We'll see how she's walking in the morning.

three more pics from the other side where masses of people were ascending .

just as nice a mid nov. day could be.

planning to get out tom. to .

a small wind event has moved snow up high on the hill. skied out under sugarloaf chair side of the hill from the top of collins lift not so many people out there.

That seems bizzare that Alta doesn't put controls on uphilling when they are actively working the mountain early season. Every place over this way publishes when uphilling is allowed and where.... and uphilling basically isn't allowed until enough terrain is open and mtn ops is finished with the core trails near the base of the mtn.

Seems excessively dangerous to see that cat trying to work with all those people on there at the same time.

i'm not 100% sure but tommorrow morning if you were to look at altas web sight it"ll probably say there's no uphill traffic allowed . they usually only post when something isn't allowed. where as snowbird has become a bit unfriendly to early season travel . understandable though with early season deaths over there . i used to travel into peruvian gulch quite frequently when there were as many people at alta as yesterday . thank you alta for allowing us this weekend ...

I'm actually surprised that they haven't yet restricted uphill travel, they usually do that about a week before opening. I just checked this morning, still no restrictions mentioned.

I suspect not enough snow for avalanche safety to be an issue yet.

Danger was moderate on north-facing slopes after the last storm, although of course it's bonded some since then. Nevertheless, we were never on or below any threatening slopes. We were traveling entirely within safe zones.

That's hardly, however, the only reason to restrict uphill travel. People simply get in the way.

it all blew away this afternoon up high on the hill .......... amyz and i were only able to stick around on top for half to three quarters of an hour . winds were blowing 25 at least sustained and gusting to 40 at least . BIG wind event ahead of this storm. far fewer people today than yesterday .

That's another reason that I stayed on the lower half.

So far there have been at least 4 skier triggered avalanches this season, including a 200' ride in Main Chute with attendant loss of gear.
Avalanche safety is *always* an issue. If it's deep enough to ride, it's deep enough to slide.
Again, please stop second guessing from 750 miles away and for dog's sake take an avalanche course already. At least (re)read Tremper's book.

was there that first morning and reached the ridgeline beneath the shoulder with that guy around 6:30 am. asked me where we we're headed and said "we're headed to punch bowl area", "you?" he said baldy chute. said "let me know how that turns out". thought that was pretty crazy but what do i know.

Not at all. I'm presuming Alta Ski Patrol knows their safety situation better than the peanut gallery here. I was not the one doing the second guessing.

I don't have to take a course to know it would be nuts to ski Main Chute in this level of snowpack.

Alta Ski Patrol has nothing to do with regulating safety when the mountain is closed. It needs to be approached like any other backcountry terrain.

Really? Alta can't ban uphill traffic when they think it's unsafe as EMSC cited in Colorado?

Obviously they can if Snowbird can.

Closing the hill to uphill traffic has nothing to do with avalanche risk. It has everything to do with people getting in the way. When the ski area is closed, it needs to be treated as backcountry terrain. Period.

Actually I was the one that wrote that quote above. And frankly what you wrote:

...is precisely second guessing from a distance.

And as Admin pointed out but apparently bears repeating, Alta or anyone else does not close uphill traffic pre-season due to avalanche risk. It's done to keep people away from groomers and snowmobiles and snowmaking equipment.
