Day 3

Some ibuprofen before bed last night, and another three-pill dose this morning meant that I was able to get much more skiing in today.

The snow today was nowhere near as good as it was yesterday as it stiffened up considerably overnight. Despite warm temps well into the 40s today, it never really softened up much, either. We need a good dump to cover up some of the early-season nasties and to freshen things up nicely, but we're stuck under a dome of high pressure. They're talking about a potential storm Thursday into Friday, but it's looking less and less impressive in the forecast with each passing day.

We had a big group today, and the whole family was out as The Wife and The Kid both skied. The Wife shocked me by saying that she's going to try to get out as much as she can -- maybe things are coming around?

After a 9 a.m. breakfast at Goldminer's Daughter we caught the Collins lift right after the 9:15 opening. Bob Dangerous and Marc_C were with us again today, plus our friend Sam and his kids Dean and Kelsey. We also spent a run and lunch with friend Nato.

The group stuck together for most of the day for a mix of groomers and off-piste madness, although after lunch Bob snuck over to Snowbird to sample things over there. The run of the day came from finding some left over creamy untracked dropping from Wildcat down to Collins. Other off-piste experiments were skier's right of Sunspot in amongst the rocks (not nearly as good as it looked from the Collins lift), lower Extrovert (much stiffer than yesterday), and Liftline Trees/Fred's Slot (stiff snow with some understory still poking through).

We wrapped up the day with beer under the warm sun on the Goldminer's Daughter patio as the kids took a few extra runs filming their exploits. Life's good! 8) I've attached one silent clip here:

The snow may not have been perfect, but the company and the day both were. It is mid-November after all. I had a blast.

Isn't it written into Cottonwood Canyons law that there will always be multiple Thanksgiving week storms... even if it's bare ground the week before?

I fly out there next Wednesday, and I expect a resolution.

You may get one. Thursday's trof is looking pretty week. Saturday night's looks a little better right now, and Tuesday's stronger still.

Looks like you'll overlap TirolerPeter by a day or two (he skis through Thursday), and will you be around over the weekend? If so, let's hook up on Saturday.

My only plans are Weds afternoon at whichever PC area has decent coverage  (free ticket) and Sunday at Solitude. I'm in for Saturday.

Perfect. I'm likely to be at AltaBird, barring any unanticipated obligations. I'll email you my cell phone.

I would say that first or second week of December is the average time that a big dump opens up most of LCC/BCC. This is of course one of those situations where "average" is not that useful. The real question is how often does it happen before Thanksgiving? I'd guess no more than 1/3 of seasons. Again, these are not odds I would bet an airline ticket upon.

The other thing to keep in mind (and this is what happened with Gpaul at Tahoe last year) is that if that first dump happens during your trip that may not be good enough. There can be a few days of snow stability work to be done, and there won't be much skiing available until it has been completed.
