Day 3: Happy New Year!

I love opening day at Alta. It's like a homecoming, and everywhere you turn you see friends and familiar faces, employees and fellow pass holders alike, including mbaydala. My day started out with a big bear hug from Colin, the parking lot attendant, and continued that way throughout the day. Hugs all over the place, with the others from ladies much prettier than Colin. \:D/

Bobby Danger, AmyZ, Skidog, Corey, and Ty also made it up for a few hours. I'm not sure what happened to jojo_obrien, but I'll be curious to hear, and somewhere along the way we accidentally lost Ty.

We're off to a pretty decent start this season. Collins, Wildcat, Sugarloaf and Sunnyside lifts were all running. They let us have everything off Wildcat and most of the terrain off Collins, save for Ballroom (avalanche risk) and the High T, although Race Hill, Spruce Forest, Liftline and Fred's Trees were all open. I sure wish that they left us have Backside, but that will have to wait.

Base depths are currently around 35 inches. Most people stuck to the groomers, although if you were careful there was no reason to. As a result, there was plenty of elbow room.

Although the Wildcat lot was about 90% full I never waited more than two or three chairs today.

It felt good to be home again! My legs willing, I'll be there a bunch over the next 10 days, along with perhaps Snowbird and the Park City resorts if they can get more open (Snowbird is only running Gadzoom right now with one manmade run down Big Emma, and Park City Mountain opens tomorrow with Payday, 3 Kings and First Time. I'm not sure what Canyons will have ready by the 27th.)

got in line at collins at 905 am........was running late ....missed bobby danger, but was looking for that mustache all day long......guess y'all were over on collins.....

went straight over to sugarloaf and lapped it probably 10x, getting into the rhythm of the season ........legs are ready!

took wildcat and dropped into some windswept half way decent sierra cement type powder , which, wasn't half way bad..........

took a few runs on collins and hit up the lines on west rustler ...by then, the lines were pretty chewed up ...... left early at 1230 to take care of some chores....

let it snow!!

Tourista! Why in the hell would you get in line 10 minutes before opening? Were you expecting a powder day or something? Unless it's two feet or more of new, we won't venture outside from GMD until the pre - opening line dissipates to nothing at around 9:20. Anything sooner is just plain uncivilized!

We were lapping Collins and Wildcat while you were lapping Sugarloaf. I didn't make it over to Sugar until noon. We'll be at GMD for breakfast at 8:45 tomorrow with @OutsideHilary if you'd like to join us. And we'll be waltzing over to Collins around 9:20. :wink:

And for the record we don't get Sierra cement, that snow fell light but got wind affected. Today the snow was completely wind jacked, something we're totally unaccustomed to around here. But there were some little treasures of wind sift if you knew where to find them, like the same one we skied over and over and over again today because it was so good.
