Day 6: So sick! (And not in a good way.)

I should be making turns with Telejon and Skidog right now. But Jon's head is pounding, and no sooner did Skidog buckle his boots when he got a call to pick up his sick kid from school. So I'm here at Alta solo today.

This place is absolutely deserted. I'm relaxing in the sun on the Alta Java Beach with my morning latte and there can't be more than 50 people on the hill. It says something when you only encounter one person on Devil's Elbow.

My current view. Check out the loaded ski racks at Albion.

Patrol has been bombing the crap out of Backside all morning. I just heard what must be the 10th or 15th explosion but I have yet to see any productivity from it.

Backside

Maybe I'll head down canyon to Snowbird and see what's going on over there.

Glory Hole is looking mighty nice!

I ended up bumping into TheOtherAmy, so I ditched that idea. And they're still bombing Backside!

I think they might want to avoid a repeat of a few years ago, when we had a similar snowpack at this time of year and most of Backside slid down to rock just before xmas.

I was there , that was the end of 2008 (at least it happend that year too). Here's some pics of it i had.

Forgot to mention that I bumped into skrad in the parking lot as I was waiting for Skidog. I also saw him on Friday as he's visiting from Seattle. He, too, is burning some ill-advised vacation days in November to ski the WROD. :snowball fight:

I'm retired and I'm still not skiing WROD's [-( yet.

However what's at Alta now is not WROD by my definition, so I would be skiing if I lived there. I'm not driving 10 hours until there's more snow though.

And burning non-carryover vacation days? :-k

Here's a Google Maps Photo Sphere I took today at Germania Pass atop the Collins lift:

Regrettably the seams are rather glaring on this one, much more so than the other Photo Spheres I've shot. I guess that I wasn't being very careful when I took it.

Hint: hit the full screen button in the upper right corner of the Photo Sphere and use your arrow keys. It's pretty cool.

Hi Marc,

That wasn't a vacation day.

It was an academic day. I am supposed to write papers to be published in journals.

Think I am OK - I doubt my boss is reading FTO.

Otherwise I will have to go undercover (E.Nigma, anyone?)

Well dont worry Marc..We'll be there by the 12th..:)

Is that your way of telling me that we've got a dry spell coming?
Hmmm...... Kerry and Liz arrive then as well, and you know their track record.........

I did get to carry over vacation days. In my earlier years when I only got 2 weeks I would save some in case I wanted a longer trip. In my final years I got 6 weeks of PTO and scheduled them all. In June 2009 I got swine flu and had to stay home sick 2 days. Thus a couple of days on my Costa Classica eclipse - Japan trip wound up being unpaid.

But if you have use-it-or-lose-it, I still don't see the logic of burning one of your 3(?) weeks for restricted November skiing. Even if you don't accrue them all at once for January-April, you've often praised the virtue of non-ski activities in the Intermountain West. You had a frenetic short trip to the Tetons/Yellowstone last August. Surely that trip could have been longer to be more relaxing, smell the roses and get off the beaten track more as you like to do.

You have to recall that I have the liberty of disappearing for a few hours on a powder day nearly anytime I want to. Thus no need to cash in powder days for that. And I lack your financial resources to jet set all over the world in the off season.

Thus I'm happy this week. Which is all that really matters.

Repeating my earlier question: why are you so concerned about how Admin spends his PTO time?
As I said earlier - it's kinda creepy.

Wow.

Admin, what is it like to have an Apre drink with Mr. Crocker? Does the over-analysis intensify, if that is possible, with each drink?

:rotfl:

Worse than that, he typically stays at my house when he's in Utah. Drinking seems to have little effect, but the over-analysis is definitely more intense in person.

Admin reopened the vacation day topic, I didn't.

Which is why I specifically mentioned the drive-to national park camping example.
