Day 11: Empty.

How empty?

I would have ordinarily been thrilled with the nearly private ski area today, but honestly I'm getting bored. I've been skiing every day for at least a few hours and groomers are getting old. AmyZ and I made an ill-advised foray into Backside before noon and while it was certainly edgeable and the line we chose was relatively smooth, the base has zero give to it. Ditto for Ballroom.

So we spent a few runs sticking to the groomers like the other folks who were there. There are only so many days in a row that you can ski Mambo, Main Street, Devil's Elbow, etc. before it starts getting monotonous, and judging by the number of skiers on the hill today I'm not the only one who feels that way. We could sure use the storm that's still forecast to come in Sunday into Monday.

Now, I know that it's still only November -- mind you, I'm not complaining -- but after skiing 11 days so far this month (and 10 days out of the past 13) it's getting a little old. I could stand to see a change in the snow surface and the accompanying change in what terrain looks attractive to ski.

So, after four runs we went home. And when we skied up to GMD to quit at 12:45 p.m. there was a whole five pair of skis in the racks outside.

Hope your not using up vacation days skiing groomers...

Alas, indeed I am. Most of December is already spoken for and I'm in a "use 'em or lose 'em" situation. I'll get mine eventually.

Perhaps a bit more advance planning would be appropriate. I realize that the first half of 2012 did not produce its usual quota of powder days, so perhaps a summer vacation was in order. Early December is not a slam dunk anywhere, as most of us found out last year. It could easily be a lot worse than it is now.

I'm still enjoying my free time. It's better than not skiing at all.

I'm surprised (and disappointed) that Admin isn't biting at Tony's second-guess chum. Is this some sort of self-improvement hocus pocus?

I must be finally maturing.

As most of you might guess, I was obsessive about optimal use of vacation time when I was working. No vacation days for local skiing unless there was a minimum 12 inches new snow. Needless to say in SoCal not many days got used that way. If I had lived in SLC in some seasons I might not have had any vacation left for travel.

Those are your rules; not necessarily for anyone else.
You? Obsessive? I'd have never thought....

Heh, I predict that the first time he questions why you stayed at Alta instead of crossing over to Snowbird, you'll go postal.

That probably won't happen before March. :troll:
