Day 12: Powder!

Marc_C's friends Liz and Kerry from back East must be Ullr in disguise, for every time they visit they bring snow. Today was no different.

Unfortunately, we somehow became separated at the very start of the day, and we stood atop Wildcat for a while before determining that they never got on that lift.

So without even making one turn our posse was down to Skidog, Tele Jon, Dale, Pat and yours truly. The rest of the day, however, is one long white blur. First few runs were down through Wildcat trees, bombing through untracked, and Skidog bombing into a deep (~12-foot) hole after somehow not seeing the snow bridge across it. I turned around and could only see the top of his helmet as he struggled to climb out! =D>

We then hit more untracked on Greeley hill before working our way toward Supreme, scheduled to open at 11 for the first time this weekend. That meant that it hadn't been touched since the storm began, and we rollicked on Calf Rope in untracked goodness and went back for more in No. 9 Trees. We broke trail across the flats to ski the trees in more untracked above Challenger Gully, and did it again, finding more untracked in Baby Bear trees.

In short, we pounded hard as light snow continued to fall all morning. Temps were cold, ~1F at the top, so the new snow stayed light and dry. By the time we finally stopped for lunch at Alf's I was whooped, ready to take a nap right on the table. I therefore hit the road by 2:00, heading down canyon as sunshine began to break through. Bumped into Tirolerpeter briefly as I was walking out of Alf's.

No pix, no video ... we were rocking too hard to stop today.

Got up to Alta a bit late (Had to snowblow our sidewalks, driveway, and garage apron before setting off for the trip up LCC.) and struck up a conversation in the packed Wildcat parking lot with a nice young man (to me 35 is young) from Turkey who had never skied Alta before. He was asking questions about the mountain and I simply invited him to tag along with me. We did a couple of warm-up runs off Collins down to the Angle station and I took him through the trees where we found lots of nice soft untracked areas. We then worked our way over to Supreme, and did several runs down through the various chutes off Challenger. I confess that I was too lazy to hike up Catherine's and since it was "day 1" for my guest, he demurred also. Never having been to Alta, my new found friend couldn't stop grinning at the fun he was having. Despite having started late, we kept finding lines that had not been skied and were often into snow that was at least shin deep. While heading into Alf's for a pit stop we ran into Admin who was calling it a day. I was glad to see that he was able to get out there today despite the mishap with the knee. After a break, we did a couple of hot warm-up laps off Sugarloaf, and then took the traverse back to Wildcat. We finished up the day with a couple of trips out to the "Ho" where there was still plenty of soft snow even though it had been thoroughly thrashed by late afternoon. Our last "run" was to GMD for a Cutthroat to finish the day. It was not only a good ski day, but a great day of conversation about the social, political, and economic realities of a region of the world that I have not had the opportunity to visit yet.

I, for one, appreciate well-written, descriptive TRs whether they have pics or not. Good writing can take you anywhere the author decides.

Don't let these young whippersnappers who are addicted to texting, videos, I-Pods and other techie junk fund tell you otherwise. [-X

I agree with ssycher. For many of us timeliness is key, even if the report is short. And admin's reports are credible and plenty descriptive even without pics.

There are some posters for whom we are more likely to request pics in order to validate credibility :P .
