Day 15: Holy wind affect, Batman!

With wind chills of ~ -25ºF yesterday I stayed home. Last night I watched the westerly wind gusting over 60 mph on Baldy, and a bit less on top of Collins. I went up today expecting that the wind had blown snow from some places and deposited it elsewhere.

What I hadn't realized was that "elsewhere" is somewhere in Wyoming. Last night's westerlies scoured the High T clean of anything resembling snow, leaving a rock-and-ice glacier that was hard enough just to cling to, let alone get through. In the lee of the wind, yes, a lot was deposited on east-facing aspects...but topped with a 3"-thick wind slab, and most places to receive those deposits were closed due to the dangers from the wind loading. First run down High Greeley was hell for me as I went from a supportable slab on top to a punchy crust on the flats in the middle.

After that I stuck to the groomers -- Mambo, Stimulation, Aggie's Alley, etc. -- plus some highly trafficked areas like Race Course, The Saddle, Spring Valley, etc. They were decent but not what I drove up there for. After two hours I'd had enough, and en route home passed Marc_C as he headed up LCC.

I'll wait for tonight and tomorrow's storm instead.

Yep. There was some good and some not so good. I spent most of my short day on Supreme, where the #9 trees were skiing quite well, as were the Bear shots, probably because of traffic. Baby Bear looked and felt almost like a packed powder groomer! The White Squaw chutes were in good shape too, as was Challenger, of all things (if you stuck to the sides). We were too lazy and unmotivated to head into Catherine's. Over in Collins land, Spring Valley, the Saddle, and the afore mentioned Racecourse were the best picks.

I left after about 3 hrs of skiing, feeling a bit beat from the past week, when the light snow started, the light went even flatter, and, inexplicably given the temperatures, my hands froze.

Who the hell ordered up the ice fog?

How much does an out-of-commission Collins lift affect things?

It happens often enough to know that it's an annoyance, but not debilitating. In a way it's almost good on a powder day because very few make the long loop from Sugarloaf each run.

Speaking of powder days, 18" of new fluff today! \:D/ Getting ready now.

We got yer wind on Monday at Whiteface. It was rippin and just crazy cold. Windchills way below zero. Those who ventured out in it said it was brutal.

It was -20c (windchill something like -30c) yesterday morning...I didn't feel like walking the 3km to work in the morning (public transit strike), so I took the day off and went skiing instead.
