Day 20 - One word: stiff.

Unfortunately, the snow. I gave up after 3 runs to drive home. There are better things to do than ski on that stuff.

Spent the morning lapping mineral basin which skied pretty well. Nice wind buff back there. Malu malu off the rd to Provo wasn't bad either. Lower mountain on the way back to the tram was decent skiing as well.

Sitting at the rustler for lunch , spending most of the afternoon on Sunnyside with the wife but I do have an Alta bird pass so I'll see if it softens up a little in the sun.

why did conditions go in crapper so fast?

Winds gusting to 40 mph at the top of Collins. Stripped everything soft off and left sastrugi behind -- it skied like Mammoth, so I left. Everything will be back to normal by Monday at the latest.

You should also understand that most Eastern visitors would be perfectly happy with what was out there today. I wasn't.

From today's avi advisory:
The winds have done extensive damage to the snow surface conditions.

Fixed that for ya! (FTO fora *really* need a strike-through tag)

re: 3 runs on "Stiff Snow"
aka Alta Spoiled-Brat Syndrome

Guilty. My driveway to loading Collins is 25 minutes, and there's always another day (including Monday which should cover up that crud with 12-18"of new). Why would I bother?

That should be "local Utah" SBS. It's by no means restricted to Alta. There are a lot of Snowbird skiers who stayed home today as well.

Were there no slopes leeward of that wind getting the deposition? It happens sometimes at Mammoth when the wind is upslope from the east. Usually like last Thursday when it's from the NW or SW there are quite a few soft stashes if you look around.

This afternoon west rustler and that side of the ridge were skiing really well actually. Smooth subsurface and nice wind sift blown on top, I should have taken a picture as every turn by people coming down had snow flying up in the air and blowing around. Was pretty enjoyable actually.

Interestingly, Alta was pretty busy , solid 5 minute lines after lunch for Collins but no lines at all at snowbird in the morning. Sunnyside was jammed after three but thats due to the $10 after three deal I think more than anything.

Again, the skiing in mineral basin was pretty good, soft and easy to carve into off trail.

I told you before that I consider "good windsift" to be an oxymoron.

And socal, no lines in the morning at Alta either. Folks must have started late today.

Admin left way to early. Stuck around and when the sun came out and visibility improved you could clearly see where the snow was going. As mentioned west rustler had a nice few lines of pool table smooth edgable chalk. Sunspot also had some very nice spots.
The real days winner was stonecrusher. Smooth sift top to bottom, in the words of bobbyd BEAUTIFUL. Did it about 6 times it was that good. The high t is literally shot. You walk the entire green carpet n and even getting to that is sporting. Yeah tHa means rocks.. Lots of em. Once past piss pass there is an entrance lower down the ridge to stonecrusher not a rock at all in there and easy access to the money run.
Have a few shots from my phone I might get around to posting later. All in all an acceptable day. Thankfully for the last few years following bobbyd I have learned a thing or 2 about finding snow even when conditions send other home. Yeah that's for you admin the newly coined "snow snob" :stir: :stir:

I wear that as a badge of honor, thank you.

Blackcomb had Alta snow today. Maybe it blew over here?

Ski on chairs but that is about to change with the holidays just about here.

whoopies was buffed two hundred yards wide today from the knuckle head to the base of little cloud chair , mark malu the same , pretty much anything off the road to provo is really smooth , a bit rocky when you get further down the hill but plenty nego. . mineral basin was skiing sweet , out over the hillary step area was smooth with a light dusting of snow from the night before . alta ski patrol knocked the hell out of perlas with a slide down the middle of ballroom out across main st. which had to large a debris field to allow the public to ski across . tombstone was smooth as could be with a bit of sift in there . west rustler was the same for that there were alot of people skiing over there , so it got chewed up a bit , nice wind sifted snow ...backside never opened today -not looking good for tom. either ...
