Day 19: Everything still on hold
Two days after the Christmas Day storm, all avi terrain remains on hold. The only thing open today that wasn't yesterday was looker's right of the Supreme chair as far as the Rock 'n Roll gate. They're obviously letting everything settle down a bit more, which is fine by me, although I would've loved it had they opened one of the lower Supreme Bowl gates today. Maybe tomorrow.
Bobby Danger, Marc_C, Dale, Pat, Amy and I still managed to find pockets here and there to play in. We had a ball. Vacationers are now here in full force. I found myself offering advice to those clearly bewildered at trail maps near lift unloading stations. Supreme opened around 10:30, and by 11:25 the line was insane (probably ~20 minutes). We therefore took an early lunch at Alf's, and even at that hour we were lucky to find a table. I gave up on the grill line and went to the deli instead. By the time we returned to Supreme, thankfully the line was down to 3 minutes or less.
Actually, all lines for us today were three minutes or less by playing it smart, with the exception of our first trip up Collins at ~5-10 minutes first thing in the morning.
Today was cold, and only seemed to get colder in the afternoon when a stiff breeze returned. On our last trip across the EBT we were sandblasted by blowing snow as I thought about the hangfire above. I gave up at 2:30 and called it a day.
Of note, there were huge slides everywhere today. The entire width of East Baldy above the EBT slid with a crown of at least 10 feet, scouring all the way down to the faceted November layer.
I saw no evidence of explosives, which leads me to suspect that it may have gone naturally overnight. Baldy Shoulder ran clear down across the Main Street flats and almost to where Mambo rejoins Main Street. It'll take a lot of snow to make Tombstone and Armpit attractive again. The entire gully leading from the Spiny Chutes is filled with debris from the Spinys and Supreme Challenge, all of which slid, too. Surprisingly, Tower 12 Chute didn't slide. It's pretty damned scary and unpredictable out there.
