Day 32: Sunshine, finally!
One unwanted side-effect of a constant string of storms since early December is that I can count the number of days I've skied in the sunshine on one hand this winter. Today brought a wonderful respite of a strong, warm sun, light breezes, and temperatures in the upper 20s. It was, in a word, gorgeous.
It was another large posse today. Patti Mac is visiting from NY, and her friend Howard and Howard's daughter Sara joined us. Besides the visitors, we had Skidog, Marc_C, Bob Dangerous and Dale as well as yours truly.
With stiff snow in the morning from this week's wind and cold overnight lows we stuck to the groomers for much of the morning. One notable exception was when they opened the gate to Evergreen, which skied dreamy creamy through untracked windpack that only gave a few inches as you carved each turn. Sara pulled up to the group at the bottom with a grin that stretched from ear to ear.
Bob headed off to meet another visitor at Snowbird. We hit up Cecret Saddle to Cabin Hill, but we didn't spot the best line in Cecret Saddle until after we'd dropped it so Dale, Skidog and I went back for a second helping while the others grabbed a table on the deck at Alf's for lunch.
Skidog bugged out at that point, and after lunch we turned things up a notch. Dale, Marc_C and I took a lap on Backside while the others stuck to the groomers, meeting up at the bottom of Sugarloaf. Patti needed some work to the footbeds in her new boots, and we managed to convince Howard and Sara to join us for a second lap on Backside. That grin was spotted once again!
But those two were pooped and called it a day. Dale, Marc_C and I were the only ones left and we headed out the High T to finish up in Eagle's Nest, which given the other stuff we'd been skiing was still surprisingly stiff.
Here's the video. It includes a few scenes from Friday at Powder Mountain with Sharon, Skidog, Amy and Pam as I had those shots in the can but not enough to make a movie with just those. I also just discovered that I've been shooting all week at 15 fps rather than 30 fps -- I'm not sure how the setting got changed but it's not as smooth as usual as a result:
